4.0 out of 5 stars very good tripod for travelling light, July 4, 2004
I've had this tripod for about 3 years now. It's extremely small when telescoped down (10" in length) and light in weight (about 1 lb), thereby allowing me to stow it away completely in my camera bag when I'm travelling. I don't even notice its weight when I'm walking around taking photos. When fully extended, its height measures about 40", which means you'll have to bend down a bit when taking photos. The 3-way panhead allows for complete freedom for orienting your mounted camera.

The tripod is strong enough to support small to medium size cameras; I never had a problem with my old Olympus 3030Z digicam. It can even support my Canon SLR, but it is not stable enough to mount heavy lenses that extend outward (for example, my 1.56 lb, long Canon 70-200L lens produces too much torque and tips the tripod over, but my 1.1 lb, shorter Tamron 28-75 lens is ok on it).

Negatives: the legs lock with a twisting motion, which is less secure than clasps found on larger, heavier tripods. I've had the legs start to telescope down on occasion unless I've carefully locked the legs. Additionally, locking the legs at a height less than full extension is difficult as well.

Overall, a very good tripod if you want to pack light. However, it does have its deficiencies as noted above.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, April 13, 2005

This tripod is light and small - excellent for carrying along. The worksmanhip is also excellent - better than I had expected for this price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for traveling, December 9, 2006

This review is from: HAKUBA USA INC CT8-CG Compact Tripod (Electronics)
I bought this tripod for my 2-week trip to Asia last summer and had it in my backpack the whole time. I never felt the "weight" of the tripod at all. It took mere seconds to "assemble" and "disassemble". To assemble, you just pull each leg all the way out; to disassemble, you just push each of the legs in.

The only reason I did not give it a 5 stars was because a couple of times, one of the legs wouldn't stay extended and start to tilt when I'm setting up the shots. Granted, I was using the compact Sony DSC-T9 digital camera. If it was a SLR camera, this tripod will definitely not be able to support the weight.

Again, for compact digital camera and compact trip on a walking/hiking trip, it's a great tripod.
