Book Description

February 28, 1990
Thirteen-year-old March, an epileptic, comes to live with her dog breeder father and through her growing attachment to her father's prize dog, Pride, learns a great deal about love, truth, courage and how to cope with adverse fate.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8-- When her mother returns to college, March Halsey, 13, is sent to live with her father, whose livelihood is breeding and showing collies. March discovers that she enjoys working in the kennel, finding particular pleasure in the love and loyalty of Pride, her father's champion show dog. Skillfully defined and melded into the storyline is March's epilepsy, which she keeps a secret from her new classmates, dreading the occurrence of a seizure in front of them. Epilepsy is not March's only concern, however. When she accompanies her father to dog shows, she discerns that he is still basking in the glow of a one-time victory for Pride, who seems to be passing on a defective, fatal gene to his progeny. When March's inevitable seizure occurs at school, she courageously confronts her classmates in an effort to remove the fear associated with epilepsy. This is no sugar-coated episode; Hall writes with insight and genuine understanding of teenage behavior. As in prior novels, she styles a dog story abundant in information for canine lovers without detracting from the story line. Strong characters, compelling plot, and accurate information come together in yet another quality offering from Hall. --Sylvia V. Meisner, Allen Middle School, Greensboro, NC

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Sad Ending, July 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: HALSEYS PRIDE: A Novel (Hardcover)
It was a pretty good book, but it's kind of hard to understand if you don't read a lot into the plot and characters. Also, some things are seemingly taken for granted throughout the book, and the ending was disappointing. It is still a good book in the sense that the young Halsey girl is learning to cope with life and is opening her eyes more towards the world.
