From Publishers Weekly

Young Harald foils the hunters' attempts to capture the Great Stag in a haunting medieval tale. Ages 5-9.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 The Great Stag is a legend in young Harald's medieval world, and one breath-stopping morning Harald fi nally sees it himself. Frighteningly, that's the very day the baron has de clared a hunt for the stag, with a prize for its capture. Harald decides to pro tect the stag by confusing the trail with deer droppings; then, covered with the scent, Harald briefly becomes one of the hunted. He is saved, though, by an old hunter, and the stag escapes once again. Months later Harald discovers a gift: the silver antlers the stag has shed, left as if on purpose for Harald. In spite of a rather abrupt beginning and a mat ter-of-fact narrative, the book has a cer tain magic as readers enter Harald's world of courage, mystery, and reward. The illustrations are magnificent. Dou ble-page spreads with rich and evoca tive colors create the forest world fully and imaginatively. The use of light, par ticularly as it filters through the trees at sunset, is spectacular. Carrick's atten tion to details of moss, fern, bark, ani mal life, medieval garb, expression, and especially composition has created page after page of glorious art. 5.0 out of 5 stars A surrprising find!, September 12, 2005
By
My four-year-old picked this book while at the library. I was like, great, a book about a deer...but it's actually really GOOD! It's set in the Middle Ages (believably so, I might add), in a forest owned by a Baron. Harald, a peasant boy, befriends a great stag who eludes many hunters.

The plot moves at a good pace and has a lot of excitement, conflict and danger for both Harald and the animals of the forest. Older children would probably enjoy it as well. I know I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Darn Good Book, July 5, 2004
This review is from: HARALD+THE GREAT STAG PA (Paperback)
I am a college student studying to get a degree in General Ministries. I tell you it is a shame that this book is out of print. It is one of the best children's books I have ever read!! It has an interesting plot. It takes place during the Middle Ages. Harald is a young boy who is captivated by this Great Stag. When he finds out that the Baron has organized a hunt to kill the stag, Harald sets out to confuse the Baron's hunting dogs. The book contains vibrant and life-like watercolors and colored pencil drawings - something that is rare in the newer children's books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book, August 21, 2009
This review is from: HARALD+THE GREAT STAG PA (Paperback)
A sweet children's story of a boy who throws hunters off the scent so that the largest stag of the Baron's forest will not be found by his huntsmen. It is too bad that this listing does not show the cover, which is a glorious watercolor picture of Harald in the forest. Lush watercolor illustrations throughout the book bring warmth and color to the forest. Ages 5-9, or anyone interested in medieval tales.
