Book Description

John Harding is an American Hero, Ex-Marine, CIA Agent, Cage Fighter. Standing at 6' 6" he's a mountain of a man. Cage-fighting is a front for his CIA work. He's likable and at times humorous.....but deadly.
"Harding makes Jack Reacher look like a Sunday School teacher" ... a fan

** Book 2 - HARD CASE - THE LURE OF HELL, with John Harding released June 13th      amazon.com/dp/B00DDA4D5M**

<span>"John Harding takes no prisoners. He's a cage fighter who plays by the rules unless it's necessary to break them along with a few other things. The fast-paced dialogue fits the no holds barred action that pits Harding against terrorists, the Russian Mafia, and guys who just don't like his attitude or his prowess in the ring. This cool story interweaves Harding's personal life with his kick-boxing life as well as a little CIA covert action thrown in. This one delivers a terrific knock-out punch and you'll love every minute of it."</span>

"This is a very good story with super action and lovable characters. John Harding is an all around American hero who was in Special Ops in the Marines, then was recruited into the CIA as an operative because of his multi-language abilities.

<span>Harding also loves to fight and he fights very well. He's unbeaten. He shows no mercy against his opponents in the cage or while on assignment. He's a stone cold killer. The author created an exceptional character in Harding that the reader just falls in love with. There's also a great deal of humor in this story and at times hilarious interaction between the characters.</span>

<span>I totally recommend this book not only to men who enjoys action packed books but to women as well because this guy is one super stud. Great read. On to another book by DeLeo called </span>Cold Blooded"

SYNOPSIS
A young teen boy in Leavittsburg, Ohio grew up mean. He ran away from his alcoholic father at the age of fourteen. An old man in Texas takes an interest in him, helping the runaway get a new identity. The boy becomes John Harding.

Harding joins the Marine Corps with his new identity, looking for a chance to get an education and start over. While in special ops overseas, he's recruited by a CIA agent who sees something in Harding besides his knack for languages and combat skill. Denny Strobert knows he's found a killer.

HARDCASE begins in a back alley warehouse in East Oakland, CA, where Harding fights for money, and to keep his skills honed, coupled with the fact he likes it. Harding does odd jobs with the only guy he trusts implicitly, his handler and manager, Tommy Sands. They bodyguard, escort tourists around the Bay Area, and do bail bond, skip trace work for a lawyer named Tess Connagher.

Two events throw Harding's seamy life in the shadows out into the light. Strobert is ordered to enlist Tess Connagher's law firm to act as an intermediary with Harding in order to protect an outspoken Afghani woman whose family Harding protected long ago. The woman's father requested him, and the state department realizes they'll be off the hook if anything happens to Samira Karim while under Harding's care. Secondly, Harding fights a particularly brutal fight with a Russian mob backed fighter named Van Rankin who hates Harding. They'd had words.

The YouTube video of Harding's subsequent beat-down of Rankin goes viral along with many of his prior fights. When Rankin's Russian mobster backer, Alexi Fiialkov pushes for a rematch on the UFC circuit, CIA Agent Strobert sees infinite possibilities since the United Arab Emirates has part ownership in the UFC. Some matches would be taking place in Dubai, where the CIA knows targets of opportunity show up from time to time.

From the Author

In John Harding I created a larger than life sentinel, guarding the few threads of life within his grasp. Harding harbors no illusions about humanity or the clandestine bosses trying to pull his strings. He cares little for anything other than his friends and his country. Pain is his friend and death is his gift.

I wanted to really like this book, because of the previous reviews I had read, and because I happen to like tough-guy spy/detective stories, noir or not.

Unfortunately, this book reminds me of a medieval painting - the characters are all depicted in two dimensions only. I love action and this book certainly has plenty, but without characters that seem real - and these don't - the action sequences don't accrue much emotional importance and stretch the credulity of even those predisposed to suspend their disbelief.

This book seems just a monotonous re-telling of one barely interconnected short story after another of Harding's bone breaking, neck choking, bullet riddling killing of scary he-men less able than himself. And, the same shallowness is pretty much true of all the supporting characters, both men and women, as it is of John Harding, the protagonist-wrestler-skip tracer-CIA agent-Special Forces operator-sexual athlete cardboard superman who is supposed to carry this story on his well muscled back. The story line changes, very implausibly so, from one improbable scenario to another, with little more than a standup comedian's eight word segway between them. Furthermore, Harding seems always to be protected from real injury by some invisible talisman of the martial arts, with no professional villain fast enough or alert enough or smart enough or calm enough to put a pre-aimed bullet or well-yielded knife into his heart from three feet away. This seems so repeatedly preposterous that, even without considering that his character is not formed enough to elicit anyone's true sympathy, or even empathy, I eventually began to hope that he was at least seriously injured enough to lend some semblence of reality to the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definition of Noir July 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is how you do hard boiled. I've read 10,000 books and written 20. This is how you do it. Relentless action. Terse sentences. A protag who is believable if only because he never breaks character. If you enjoy action, and a character who stays true to form, this WILL satisfy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Move Over, Jack Reacher! May 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved this story! John Harding makes Jack Reacher look like a Sunday school teacher. I enjoyed this story so much that the myriad of typos and grammatical errors barely bothered me...and I'm a copy editor. ;-) (Without all those errors, though, I'd've given it five stars instead of four.)

2.0 out of 5 stars Ugh
Poorly written, formulaic. It seems as a poor rip-off of Jack Reacher, john Rain, et al.
Couldn't get past the first couple of chapters.
Returned the book for refund.
