5.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good, June 21, 2008

This review is from: HARD DRIVE, 500GB FW400/USB2 COMBO (Electronics)
I've had this drive for a month, it's been perfect. It replaces a WD "My Book" drive of the same size. I'm sorry to say that I've had two of the WDs fail at 13 months (the warranty on them is 12 months). I'm hoping for many more years of good use from the G-Tech. Using the FireWire 400 interface it's slightly faster than the My Books were with the USB 2.0 interface.

The aluminum case and the overall design of the G-Tech certainly gives one confidence, mechanically the drive case is extremely well constructed.

If I have one negative on the G-Tech drive it's the white LED on the front, which is always on whether the drive's being accessed or not. When the drive is being accessed the LED flashes brighter. If it's in your line of sight it's like having a flashlight pointed your way, especially if the room is dark. I suppose this is just one of the many good uses for duck tape.

Just what I was looking for, as it's got Firewire to go with my old Mac and USB 2 so I can use it with newer machines. Plus, very quiet, small footprint. Using it with Superduper for backups, with plenty of space to spare.

The G-Tech Combo connection drive is great for my MAC computers. I especially like the facts that i can use this with all the MAC computers i have. Firewire for the iMac, and MacBook Pro, and USB 2.0 for the MacBook Air.

The drive is very robust and is not adverse to being moved around, with an inevitable bump or two in the process. I use the drive for Video and Audio files. The drive is very responsive and looks sharp! The case matches the Aluminum MAC products perfectly.

Recommend this drive for out of the box MAC compatibility, sleek looks, robustly manufactured and speedy external storage needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars G is for great!, July 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HARD DRIVE, 500GB FW400/USB2 COMBO (Electronics)
The G-tech G-drive combo was easy to setup right out of the box. The drive is very quite and can barely notice its running. Hooking up was done in a flash and nice to get both firewire and usb cables in the box. The power supply has fairly long cabling so it isn't an issue reaching power strip. This drive isn't all that portable because it is not USB powered and fairly large but very useable if you plan on leaving it on the desktop. The LED on the front of the unit is a little on the bright side but nothing a piece of black tape can not fix.

This is an excellent MAC-compatible hard drive. One of the nice features is that it has an on/off switch for when you are not using it. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Considered going with cheaper drives but I'm glad I chose the G-Drive. It's a solid drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough machine, March 28, 2009

Unlike flimsy plastic drives, the G-Drive is constructed of thick aluminum, with a handsome, high-tech design that would complement a Mac Pro desktop in particular. This works best with Fireware or USB2 - both offer fast transfer speeds without any problems. Although I'm currently using it to hold Windows graphics files, it handles both Windows and Macintosh with ease.

Some may find fault with the fairly bright light, or prefer a drive that's a little smaller. Try it out - you'll probably find that the reliability is matchless; I can process files and the drive barely gets warm.
