Book Description

July 4, 2005
The HBCU Guide is a fun and enlightening manual that will equip current and prospective students with valuable tips for successfully handling the HBCU (historically black college or university) experience. From cafeteria food to Greek life, author Robin M. May, with input from college students and alumni from around the country, has compiled a list of things to know that will surely ring true for students at HBCU institutions:

  • Never date two men or two women in the same fraternity or sorority
  • Always wear flip-flops in the bathroom
  • “Freestyle” for your first year, if necessary
  • Do not get sucked into the credit card promotions
  • Purchase at least one dry-clean-only business suit for your interviews

These are just a few of the tips in The HBCU Guide that will prepare collegians for student life, taking up residence, the academic experience, personal growth, money matters, and getting started down a career path. Knowing that the African-American college experience is unique, May has put together a light-hearted yet informative guide that will help turn an average student into a great one. 1.0 out of 5 stars Cant believe I paid $13 for this., August 5, 2009
This review is from: The HBCU Guide: 100+ Things to Know (and a Few Other Things You Need to Do)! (Paperback)
I could have easily compiled this information with a few hours of research on the internet. This book is not worth the $13. Maybe $3. I read it in 10 minutes and now it just sits there. I feel stupid. The book has half a page (or a few sentences) of information and 1 or 2 dumb facts at the bottom. Lots of empty white space. So I paid for space?

This book is a great gift for someone who is considering attending an Historical Black College or University or for one who is already attending one. It is light, funny and yet truthful and will be a yearly gift for friends and family who are high school seniors and/or graduates.
