5.0 out of 5 stars Why only Portrait? July 2, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I must say that watching HBOGO on an actual Kindle App, instead of a side-loaded Android app, is much more convenient. No more turning off the wifi, launching the app, then turning on the wifi and hitting "try again" to bypass that pesky error that pops up on the side-loaded version. I can also adjust the volume without the software stopping playback and forcing me to restart the video from the beginning. The image is much clearer, and now that they've resolved that pesky Time Warner issue, things are looking up.

But here's my problem. Every video shows in portrait. That means every movie, documentary, whatever that I watch shows up in a 4.7" x 3" box across the center of the screen. Or, if you remove it from "full screen" mode, it shows it at the top, with all the information about the video on the bottom. And, no, tilting the device does not change the orientation.

In the side-loaded version, it shows the video in landscape and it takes up the whole screen. I'm not sure why the video orientation is different on the kindle app, but it seems like a complete waste to show the content in such a tiny area when you have a whole 7-inch screen at your disposal.

I mean, if I only want to watch a 4-inch image, I can watch it on my phone.

****Edited to Add***
After looking at the sample photos, I realized that the image is SUPPOSED to show up landscape, so I investigated further. It turns out that the screen rotation on my Kindle Fire was somehow locked. I have no idea how that occurred since I didn't lock it. But, there you go. I unlocked it and now the image toggles to landscape when I tilt.

Since I can now view in landscape, I'm upgrading my rating to five, because it now works exactly the way I need it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars THANKS HBO & DIRECT TV June 7, 2012

Worth the wait! Great picture quality and it runs just fine on the Kindle Fire. Does go through the battery pretty quick but that's what the charger is for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Battery hog but access to all HBO shows June 7, 2012

So far I've only tested the Kindle Fire app sparingly but I like the look. The app isn't as nice as for iPad but chalk that up to Android.

Playback is fairly decent but some WiFi lag is noticeable especially if trying to go back or advance a show. The app will also drain the battery fairly quickly depending on length of video. If you go back to your Home screen make sure to kill the app with something like Task Killer in order to prevent battery drain when not using the app.

I'll use the app more over the next couple of weeks to see how it fairs longer term.

It would be awesome if this were available to non cable subscribers. I believe there is a market for people that just want cable or satellite like services for tablets, phones and computers without the need for a home cable box with subscription. I would be willing to pay like 5 to 10 bucks a month directly to hbo just for access to the content in the hbo go library

5.0 out of 5 stars Time Warner isnt Time Warner Cable =2 Diff Companies August 10, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
Sadly people are not very smart at times and just want to bash companies. Time Warner Cable is in the list and the application works perfectly for me! It will definitely suck your battery dry as it is a streaming application and requires a lot of resources on the device...LOL!

BTW, Time Warner does own HBO, but Time Warner Cable doesnt as they are two totally different companies and have been for a few years.
