It would be awesome if this were available to non cable subscribers. I believe there is a market for people that just want cable or satellite like services for tablets, phones and computers without the need for a home cable box with subscription. I would be willing to pay like 5 to 10 bucks a month directly to hbo just for access to the content in the hbo go library

4.0 out of 5 stars HBO GO January 19, 2013
Verified Purchase
The HBO GO (Kindle Tablet Edition) is a good app, and does what it is supposed to, however, be advised that you can not connect your Kindle HD Tablet to your television, as HBO blocks this function. You will be limited to watching only on your tablet (therefore the 4 star rating). Update of my previous review (31 July 2013); I now give it 5 stars as the streaming issue has been resolved. I highly recommend this app. This is an update to my previous update(04/08/2014; HBO still blocks streaming to television via my Kindle Fire HD tablet, yet claims to be resolving the issue. I therefore change my rating back to the original 4 star rating. As for the new Amazon Fire TV, I do not have it nor do I intend to purchase it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why only Portrait? July 2, 2012
Verified Purchase
I must say that watching HBOGO on an actual Kindle App, instead of a side-loaded Android app, is much more convenient. No more turning off the wifi, launching the app, then turning on the wifi and hitting "try again" to bypass that pesky error that pops up on the side-loaded version. I can also adjust the volume without the software stopping playback and forcing me to restart the video from the beginning. The image is much clearer, and now that they've resolved that pesky Time Warner issue, things are looking up.

But here's my problem. Every video shows in portrait. That means every movie, documentary, whatever that I watch shows up in a 4.7" x 3" box across the center of the screen. Or, if you remove it from "full screen" mode, it shows it at the top, with all the information about the video on the bottom. And, no, tilting the device does not change the orientation.

In the side-loaded version, it shows the video in landscape and it takes up the whole screen. I'm not sure why the video orientation is different on the kindle app, but it seems like a complete waste to show the content in such a tiny area when you have a whole 7-inch screen at your disposal.

I mean, if I only want to watch a 4-inch image, I can watch it on my phone.

****Edited to Add***
After looking at the sample photos, I realized that the image is SUPPOSED to show up landscape, so I investigated further. It turns out that the screen rotation on my Kindle Fire was somehow locked. I have no idea how that occurred since I didn't lock it. But, there you go. I unlocked it and now the image toggles to landscape when I tilt.

Since I can now view in landscape, I'm upgrading my rating to five, because it now works exactly the way I need it too. However, you might want to periodically check your screen and make sure it's not locked.

Worth the wait! Great picture quality and it runs just fine on the Kindle Fire. Does go through the battery pretty quick but that's what the charger is for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Battery hog but access to all HBO shows June 7, 2012

So far I've only tested the Kindle Fire app sparingly but I like the look. The app isn't as nice as for iPad but chalk that up to Android.

Playback is fairly decent but some WiFi lag is noticeable especially if trying to go back or advance a show. The app will also drain the battery fairly quickly depending on length of video. If you go back to your Home screen make sure to kill the app with something like Task Killer in order to prevent battery drain when not using the app.

I'll use the app more over the next couple of weeks to see how it fairs longer term.

HBO, if you're reading this, please know I am a huge fan of your original productions. I never missed a Sopranos episode, and your documentaries are absolutely incredible. I am such a fan of yours, but am very disheartened with the HBO GO app for the Kindle. I downloaded it originally the first time quite a few months ago as I was ECSTATIC that I could take your shows into bed with me, or even on my travels. Unfortunately, I had to uninstall your app because I simply could not get more than two minutes into any show I chose to watch without the app shutting down on me and kicking me out or freezing my Kindle. I waited a couple months more hoping this issue would be fixed and reinstalled it only to face the same issues. It even shuts down or freezes while just scrolling through the myriad of optional shows to choose from. I am sure I am not the only one with a Kindle facing these issues, so why not fix it after months of complaints? Or, maybe I am just one of the lucky (har har) people with a glitchy Kindle. If it weren't for the fact that the crashes this apps causes to my Kindle basically rendering it useless, HBO GO would get 5 stars, no question. The layout is user friendly and you can find a whole host of movies, original series, and awesome documentaries HBO is known for that aren't always on your t.v. If there was an HBO movie on your t.v. you missed, you will most likely be able to find it on this app. Too bad I can't.

HBO Go Issue With Chromecast
I don't believe the Kindle version of the HBO GO app has been updated with Chromecast support. I'd also like to know when this might become available.

hbogo for Amazon TV?
It took 7 months after the original Kindle Fire was released for HBO GO to be supported. Amazon/HBO have had a partnership for almost 2 years now, so Fire TV "should" be available sooner than later (I'd guess by summer at the latest).

HBO GO with Comcast
I have Comcast...and it works for me. It cuts out occasionally, and buffers now and then. But overall, it's great!
