I purchased this when heating oil was $4.69 a gallon because electric heat was less expensive. I keep it because it does a great job in a small to medium room, is quiet, and uses very little electricity. A good backup for super cold NE winters, and it is easy to run off our generator when the power goes out. If you are looking for a good heater for one room, or to supplement another heating source for several rooms, this is a good buy and it is rated one of the better space heaters by the consumer reporting agencies. I found it to be reasonably quiet.

This is a radiant heater that produces heat within seconds of turning it on. I used it to warm myself after taking a bath, as it will keep me warm without warming the entire room. It worked great for that purpose, but it was noisy and rattled a bit while running.

August 30, 2010 Update;

2 weeks ago the heater stopped working. The button still causes the lights to cycle to different settings as if it were working, but it won't put any heat out. I tried hitting the reset button, but that did nothing. I am now using a nice and quiet $30 800-watt Optimus H-5210 Infrared Quartz Radiant Heater in its place and don't miss the Holmes heater.

This is a fairly quiet and powerful heater. It's not completely silent as it does have a fan, but we use it in a garage studio and it works well and quickly.

Bought this based on Consumer Reports review and it has proved to be a real workhorse as we are using it daily while we wait for spring.

Perfect for those of us who don't need to heat a huge area. Instantly blows HOT air and turns off once it reached the heat setting. The safety swich is activated with the slightest tilting/rocking of the unit.

My wife and mother-in-law are smokers but don't smoke in the house (thank God). They smoke in the garage when the weather is bad, so I bought this heater after doing some research on the internet. We couldn't be happier with this heater. It keeps my girls toasty warm.

Great for heating large family rooms. I also use it in my bedroom most mornings after showering to take the chill out of the room. It's a great buy for the price paid.

Purchased on 1/6/09. It was history by 2/8/09.

We used the Holmes One-Touch Quartz moderately over the course of one month. On 2/8/09 I plugged it in and turned it on. The lights came on, but it did not heat on any setting.

I wasn't all that pleased with it to begin with. The thermostat function was not all that effective--in fact it was worthless. It offers a choice between on/high, on/low, thermostat setting high and thermostat setting low. The thermostat can theoretically be set to temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees.

We keep our thermostat at 65 and use a heater as an auxiliary heat source to keep only the room we are using at 68 degrees. This heater had to be kept on either the on/low or on/high setting all the time we were present in order to keep the small room we used it for above 65 degrees.

For $60 I certainly expect more than one month of use.
