Product Description

The Edsal HC30127 seven-shelf standing shelf unit is made of steel to support a 107-lb. per shelf capacity and to support a 750-lb. total capacity when the weight is distributed evenly across all shelves. This unit has lipped shelves that can be installed with the lip facing downwards to create a flat surface for storage, or it can be installed with the lip facing upwards to create a tray with shallow edges for holding cans, books, and similar items. The corner post holes on this shelf unit are punched at 1-1/2" intervals for precise adjustment to desired shelf height. This unit has cross-braces on the back, and braces on both sides and on the front for rigidity. This shelf unit has a gray enamel finish for corrosion resistance.

The assembled unit is 60 x 30 x 12 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) This unit has a nut and bolt assembly. Assembly instructions, nuts, and bolts are included. Tools for assembly are sold separately.

Standing shelf units are commonly used to store items to help create organized, efficient, and safer work areas. These systems typically consist of a frame or rack with open shelves. Added components such as casters, wheels, or handles are used for applications that require mobility. Standing shelf units are used in a variety of office, industrial, educational, and residential settings.

Edsal Manufacturing Company manufactures storage systems and industrial furniture. The company, founded in 1952, is headquartered in Chicago, IL.

First let me apologize for giving this any stars. However after many hours of assembly it did make an acceptable shelf. My wife and I are finally going through boxes that have sat around since we moved and I needed a shelf for my small parts and things in my room in the basement. Already had big shelves, needed a set of small ones for little things like computer parts, manuals, small boxes of items that would get buried in a big shelf.

I had a hard time finding what I wanted, lots of shelves, not too deep or tall, and able to handle a decent amount of weight until I found the Edsal canning shelf. I read the reviews and it seemed the assembly experience of some was horrid and others not so bad. To my regret I discounted the negative reviews on assembly, figuring some portion of the reviewers might simply not have been mechanically inclined or followed directions well.

I also found the same brand and model offered online from big box retailers, figured they would not all sell it if it was as bad as some stated. This size of shelf and number of shelves does not seem common or easy to find. If some manufacture decides they can cut and bend sheet metal in a straight line they could corner the market on these shelves, however the Edsal shelf I received sure don't meet that standard.

I now believe the variation in assembly experience is due to a lack of quality control in manufacturing these shelves. Some folks got lucky, some did not. I base this on 7 years working in a plant that manufactured stamped, formed and punched steel parts that use the same processes as are used to make these type of shelves. From steel in the door to prototype development and all the manufacturing steps in-between I have been there and done that.

Yes, this takes some time to assemble. Set aside a couple of hours for this. You'll want to be in a comfortable area and working on a hard, flat surface.
That said, it really isn't that difficult to put together. It's like a large erector set project. I've assembled three and have purchased two additional ones to help organize my storage room. If they are assembled properly, they are sturdy and I haven't any reason to think they wouldn't carry the advertised weight load of 750 pounds.

A FEW TIPS
* A magnetic Philips head ratcheting screwdriver and some needle nosed pliers (to hold the bolts) are a BIG help!
* Snap the plastic feet onto the bottom of the legs before you've assembled them. It's easier to do when they are still short.
* Lay two of the assembled legs on the floor and set the shelves at the desired spacing. I took the jars I wanted to store and counted how many holes tall they were on the legs. This left me with some extra space on the bottom shelves which was fine with me.
* Count holes on the legs when positioning shelves to make sure you haven't secured one or two corners of a shelf at a different level.
* Make SURE all of the shelves are facing the same direction. The back of the shelf has a hole on the edge. (No fun discovering this after all four corners are secured.)
* Only hand tighten the bolts. You want a little wiggle room to get the unit to level before you attach the braces. Even then, you'll just went to use hand tools as the areas you are working aren't large enough for power tools that might warp the unit.
* Add the final two legs to the shelf corners (counting holes) while the unit is still laying on the flat surface.

This product is so bad it made me want to hurt someone.
If you want to test your relationship with someone, ask them to assemble this with you and see if you both survive it.

Cons:
It arrives bent and scraped all to hell.
It is 1 1/4" taller than advertised.(someone pointed out you can overlap to fix this)
You have to bend it and damn near drill it to make the bolts fit.
Any money saved is eradicated by the hours of your life you will waste putting it together.
Is made in America and made me embarrassed for my country.

Pros:
It didn't give me cancer (as far as I know).

Edits:
1) I've edited this to point out some of the comments have helpful tips. I stand by the one I have being hard to put together, but some disagree. Buy to your own comfort and risk level.

2) I didn't think having different views on shelf construction and quality was worthy of tossing around insults, but I *am* sorry that I'm not THAT funny.

3) I'm kind of depressed this review is the most successful thing I've ever done.

4) If you want a more informative, less sarcastic review by a person with a better name, see Tabooti's review.

You know the disposable heavy duty foil pans? This thing is a second cousin to them. Recently, I tripped and was off balance and caught myself on the edge of a shelf. I didn't fall on the thing, just balanced myself. The shelf I had my hand on buckled, dumping everything on it into the floor. I feel that I could craft a comparable product with a roll of aluminum foil and 20 minutes.
