Very Accurate Translation,
By
This review is from: HCSB Giant Print Reference Bible (Imitation Leather)
This Bible is one of my favorites. I have nearly every translation ever put out in my collection. This Bible offers an accurate translation in a user-friendly format. The print is large enough and dark enough to comfortably read for hours at a time without getting blurred vision. The index tabs are helpful and attractive as well. The jewel references are very helpful; the bullet notes are handy; the topical concordance is short and sweet while the maps are delightful. The black imitation leather is better than some of the real leathers out there and I would not hesitate to give this as a gift.

This is a excellent Bible. It is truly a Giant Print Bible. Giant Print can mean anywhere from 11 point to 15 point type in a Bible. This Bible is 14 point type, it is clear, and easy to read. It is a solid Bible, the bonded leather is nice, and even the Concordance has Giant Print. The paper is white, but thin, as you would expect, for the Bible would be unwieldy if the paper were thicker.
As for the HCSB version: Most modern translations have verses missing in the New Testament when comparing the modern versions to the King James Version. Some modern Bibles are missing as many as 18 verses in the New Testament, but the HCSB includes nearly all those missing verses, so it will likely be more satisfying to those looking for an easier to read Bible than the KJV, but one comparable to the KJV. The KJV reads at about 12th grade reading level, and though I love its beauty, its language is simply outdated, and was outdated even 100 years ago. The HCSB by contrast reads at around the 8th grade reading level. The HCSB is a new version that is not based upon previous Bible versions, and it takes into account the most modern Biblical research. It is accurate, up-to-date, easy-to-read, and the truly Giant Print text is very easy on the eyes. A great Bible!

This IS Giant Print,

This is the Holman Christian Standard Bible in 14-point Giant Print. A joy to behold! Although I do not need giant print, I prefer it, and this fills the bill. Unfortunately, the edition is not available in Genuine Leather, but it is bound in South Korea, so the book does have a sewn binding, as all Bibles bound in South Korea do. That is quality. Most American-bound Bibles are glue-bound crap(you should excuse the expression).
This particular Bible I am reviewing has thumb-indexing, which I cannot abide and do not recommend to anyone, especially new Bible readers, else they will never learn on their own the placement of the various books. This Bible gets my highest recommendation. The only thing it lacks are book intros and a Harmony of the Gospels. But---easy on the eyes it definitely is, and the HCSB is a remarkably accurate translation, AND easy to read, as well.(It is more accurate than the NIV). But, try to get one without the thumb-indexing.

This review is from: HCSB Giant Print Reference Bible (Leather Bound)
I have severe dry eye, and can lo longer even read an 11 pt font without a magnifier. This Bible has been a LIFESAVER! I LOVE it, love it, love it!! Thank you SO much Holman and Lifeway!!!
The Hcsb audio read by David Payne is also a WONDERFUL accompaniment to this.

Its pretty hard to ever rate a Bible below 5 stars but this Bible is extra nice. The font is very large. I can have the Bible 4-5 feet away and still easily read it. So it is the perfect preaching Bible for font size. Because of the added reference pages and large font it is a little heavy, not extremely but heavier than most. The imitation leather also doesn't have a lot of give, so you wont get angel wings if you hold it in the middle with one hand. But I bought it for the large print, refernces and the HCSB translation. The translation is excellent! I almost excusively use it for its faithful dynamic equivalent tranlating with a very modern feel for the words. I minister to people that dont read a lot of anything and they can easily grasp the HCSB but it is so dummed down that it loses the depth of scripture like I believe the CEV does. I highly recommend this Bible

Readable and Accurate,

"Bible translation is both a science and an art. It is a bridge that brings God's Word from the ancient world to the world today."
This translation attempts to provide an accurate Bible in contemporary English. A literal translation is used if it remains clear and readable. Equivalence is used in translation if the original is difficult to render or not quite accurate when translated literally. Holman CSB avoids "man" or "he"unnecessarily but it avoids restructuring the sentence to avoid "he" of "man." Holman does not change "him" to the second person, "you," or heaven forbid, making one man into many with "them" or "they." Neither does the Holman CSB neuter "fathers" and "sons" into a generic "parent" and "child." The Bible is not attempting to adopt the current day trends but rather to make it very readable and at the same time very faithful to original texts. The names for the Trinity are always capitalized, including the pronouns "He," "Him," etc. So, as an example of a well known verse: "For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life." Jn 3:16 And an example of using third person masculine singular: "Pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, and above all that you may prophesy. For the person who speaks in another language is not speaking to men but to God, since no one understands him; however, he speaks mysteries in the Spirit." Phil. 14:1 This version is very readable and at the same time accurate.

Bought this Bible for a friend with vision problems and liked it so well that I bought one for myself. I like to read scripture before going to sleep at night, so like to keep a Bible on the night stand. This Bible is easy to read when eyes are tired at the end of a long day. I have over 25 different Bibles and I rank this one among the best. I believe it to be more accurate than the NIV and other modern translations and still easy to read. Though the referencing is not complete, it does give enough references and notations to keep you on the right track. The Bible itself is well made and should last a lifetime. The price of the CSB is really amazing for a Bible of this quality. I will advise fiends and relatives that are becoming interested in Christianity that this is an excellent starting Bible to bring scripture into there lives. Looking forward to Holman bringing out a full Study version of the CSB.

I have ordered one for myself. Those around me liked it so much I got more for the people around here, since they kept borrowing mine. It is my favorite of the new translations, not too paraphrased and not too much "church words". I also liked the price as it is a good Bible for so inexpensive. Everyone loves the large print. They find it very clear, easy to read and understand. They all especially loved the price since I gave them theirs for free.

Excellent translation, binding, quality of paper, size,

This is a high quality Bible. The print is large, but the Bible is a size you can easily carry. The words of Jesus are in red, which some people may not like. However, if you are really interested in just what Jesus said, as recorded in the Bible, I think this is a useful feature. The quality of the binding and the paper is excellent. This is not as popular as other translations, but, rest assured, it is a careful and accurate one.
There are very few Bibles with large or giant print that are a reasonable size to carry with you and at a reasonable price. The gold on the edges of the pages is a very nice feature, but it is not the shiny gold that expensive bibles have. You have to really look and make sure what print size you are really getting. There is a New King James Version, the Nelson Center Column reference Bible, (not a study Bible), this Holman CSB Bible which also has references (references to related texts), and a thick, a functionally bound NIV (NIV Large-Print Softcover Bible) and others, I am sure. But they are not always easy to find. This Bible really does have large print. I used SHARPIE ACCENT GEL HIGHLIGHTERS and they did not bleed through the pages. This speaks well for the quality of the paper in this Bible as well as those particular markers. |
