Great Bible!, August 12, 2009
This review is from: HCSB Hand Size Giant Print Reference (Bonded Leather)
I have giant or large print Bibles of several translations, publishers, and editions. This one impresses me the most. I love the format Holman has chosen for the text! It is not just sentences and paragraphs, but meaningful passages and quoted passages are set apart, bold printed, or indented. It holds your attention and aids comprehension more than straight text.
The translation is fresh, easy to read and understand, and current in language. For example, contractions are used in dialog passages, much like we speak today - can't, don't, etc. The text is still reverent, "sounding" like Scripture, and not a paraphrase story book.
Holman does a great and consistent job of binding their Bibles. The leather cover, even though bonded, is very nice in quality. In my opinion, Holman surpasses the two more well-known American publishers in quality and consistency of binding and materials used. The print throughout the CSB is even (no faded passages) and easy to read.
With "Giant Print" Bibles, you're never sure how "giant" the print will be from publisher to publisher. The font size for this Bible is 10.5 which many would consider "Large Print." Truly giant print Bibles are usually in excess of 12 point font. However, this font is very readable.
If only Holman had the marketing skills and efforts of Zondervan and Nelson. The Holman Christian Standard Bible is harder to find in Christian book stores and is not as well known among the Christian community because Holman has not put the money and effort into marketing it. It is a wonderful translation, done by high-caliber scholars, and deserves to become one of the mainstays of current Bibles more widely used.
