1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap visual deterrent, deadly stench, February 4, 2010

This review is from: HDE (TM) 4-Digit Security Combination Lock for Laptops (Electronics)
Chinese instructions make setting the combination far harder than necessary.

Simply set the lock to the default 0-0-0-0 combination, then use a pen or other thin object to push in on the side button while you set your new combination.

Actual security provided by the lock is questionable, as it looks and feels as though it could be easily pulled out. However, it acts as a very affordable visual deterrent and works fine as an extra level of security in my dorm room.

**EDIT**

I actually had to go back and change this from 3 stars to 1.

The stench that accompanies this product is UNBEARABLE. The smell woke me up last night, and I could hardly breathe. My throat is completely swollen today, and I'm still trying to air out this room. I later read on another review [...] that these products are known to cause cancer.

I actually read the warnings about the smell before I bought this, but I didn't believe the stench could be THAT bad. But believe me, it is!!! If you're going to use this you should probably let it air out for at least a week!

1.0 out of 5 stars I had a horrible experience with this product, February 27, 2010
This review is from: HDE (TM) 4-Digit Security Combination Lock for Laptops (Electronics)
To begin with after setting up the new combination the lock mechanism got stuck, so the whole thing is useless, but the worst was yet to come.

After I discarded the cable and lock in the trash, the stench coming out of the device as well as the packaging that it came in permeated the whole house...it smelled like something between moth balls and kerosine. Yack.... too bad I couldn't rate this lower than 1 star.

The cord is sturdy. It took me HOURS to figure out the instructions that were so vague I had to get someone to help. Once I got it on the laptop it just hung there, and when you put the combination to the open mode, you still had to struggle and twist the devise to get it out of the laptop. If I would have known this I would have gotten the one with a key.

I'm giving it away.

1.0 out of 5 stars Endless stench, soaking in solvents doesn't help, June 3, 2010

It's too bad the smell from this is so remarkably bad, I don't know what it is but it smells evil.

I flooded it with WD-40, no help. I soaked it in artists' citrus cleaner (for cleaning oil paints from brushes), no help. I did it again for a day, flushing it, more WD-40, dried it and 2 weeks later, getting near it I can still smell it: much better, but I know it will bother me.

Amazing.

Rather than buying stronger solvents I'll simply purchase a different lock.
