Product Description

Not sure what's wrong with your network? Before you buy an expensive replacement router or cable modem, test your cables! If the wires are broken (and you know how those cables get snaked around the house) the tester will detect it. If you make your own patch cables and want to test that the wires are correctly assigned, then you need this! Test your twisted pair, Straight, Crossover, Cat 5 / Cat 5e / Cat 6 / UTP cables with RJ-11 or RJ-45 connectors. Insert the battery, turn on the tester, and connect one end of the cable to the Master side and the other end to the Remote side. The lights indicate problems (if any) with wires in the cables. A very useful item for the networking enthusiast!

I tried using this for the first time, and the led lights worked for 5 secs and that's it.

To call this item cheaply made is to insult cheaply made products. Comes without a battery of course, so I pressed my thumb on the battery cover to slide it off and the battery cover shattered into three pieces. The on-off switch slides very hard, it is binding against something. But it does test a cable. I don't know how long it will last, but I only need to test a couple of cables and then I can untape the battery (it costs more than the tester) and dump this device in the trash. For $3.25 I expected ... well, I expected to test a few cables. So I'm satisfied.

Oh yeah, please remember, according to the instructions: "Test cannot be done while RJ45's copper screezers are not totally pressed." For the sake of your children, don't forget to press the screezers!

A simple & cheap device, its construction quality is consistent with its price, but it performs its job fairly well. Hook both ends of any standard network cable (RJ45) or phone cable (RJ11), and the tester will verify continuity and sequence of each conductor within the cable. Useful for identifying damaged cables, or cables that may have been wired in a non-standard or alternate fashion (e.g., crossover cables).

definitely cant beat this price for a cable tester. also one of the easiest things i ever used. if you looking for a super high quality tester get away from this page immediately, but for the price it did its job well. i only had to test a few runs in my house and office. if all the lights light up you have solid connections on the pins. great product if you setting up a small network with custom wires, also a must have tool when making custom wires.

I'm not sure why the construction quality has been rated so low by some . . . It's a piece of plastic and the instructions are in Chinese yes but . . . It doesn't seem like it'll fall apart.

It's done exactly what I needed and at a price point that's not painful to pay if it breaks. That said I've dropped it a few times too . . . Still working.

The on/off switch is a 3-position switch for Off, On (fast scan), and On (slow scan). It only scans one wire at a time so you have to watch it for a few seconds to test a cable.

The cheap connectors mean that sometimes a good cable shows bad because it's a bad connection, not a bad cable. So before you call it a bad cable, try removing and reinserting the connectors.

The technology is a classic CD4017 design with a 2-transistor multivibrator for the clock instead of the usual 555 timer. Search google images for "CD4017 cable tester" if you want the circuit diagram.

Cold solder joints on the battery connections may be the cause of some of the complaints about this product, as battery wires can easily come loose. It looks like a static electricity zap would kill it pretty easily too. But it's not necessarily a throwaway product because it can be disassembled and repaired if needed.

Ok seriously, how can anyone complain when you buy this for $4.50 and get it shipped for free with no sales tax. Like really, your going to complain. We build & run network / phone cables and our regular units cost around $100 but, when you lose them or leave them on the job site or break them well that adds up after a while. So... I buy cheap units, lots of them! Honestly I cannot complain, haven't had too many of them go bad except being dropped off a 12-18 foot ladder hitting concrete or whatever the occasional accident might be, but I can buy about 18 of these compared to 1 expensive one. No complaints here and always keep a few in the vans.

Yes, this is cheaply made. But I've used it to test dozens of connections so far, with no issues. It feels like something I could have built as a school project, which is strangely endearing.

No instructions in my box, but it basically has two sockets and an on/off switch: if you can't figure out what to do with that, you probably shouldn't be working with electricity.

Worked a few days for me, just enough to get the initial job done. Second time around approximately 6 months later, I slid the switch to on, and smoke came out of the device. That was it.

Fairly easy to use, and for the ridiculously cheap price ($4, shipping included), maybe it was worth what I paid. Just maybe. Set your expectations appropriately.
