Oh yeah, please remember, according to the instructions: "Test cannot be done while RJ45's copper screezers are not totally pressed." For the sake of your children, don't forget to press the screezers!
It's done exactly what I needed and at a price point that's not painful to pay if it breaks. That said I've dropped it a few times too . . . Still working.
The cheap connectors mean that sometimes a good cable shows bad because it's a bad connection, not a bad cable. So before you call it a bad cable, try removing and reinserting the connectors.
The technology is a classic CD4017 design with a 2-transistor multivibrator for the clock instead of the usual 555 timer. Search google images for "CD4017 cable tester" if you want the circuit diagram.
Cold solder joints on the battery connections may be the cause of some of the complaints about this product, as battery wires can easily come loose. It looks like a static electricity zap would kill it pretty easily too. But it's not necessarily a throwaway product because it can be disassembled and repaired if needed.
Will be buying more eventually!
No instructions in my box, but it basically has two sockets and an on/off switch: if you can't figure out what to do with that, you probably shouldn't be working with electricity.
As observed, it is a very inexpensively made item. I have used mine a number of times so far both for testing a cable I crimped as well as for testing wired ethernet jacks that I am installing in my house. It has not failed to work and has caught my a couple of times when I mis-wired the jack so it does do what it should. I also mis-wired a cable once just to see how it would behave to confirm it worked.
The on/off switch does not work well. I tend to just pull the battery then I am not using it.
If you are going to use this often and for a long period of time, buy something better. If you are looking for something that will work and will just periodically use it like I am doing you should be fine.

I use this weekly, and so far it has held up well. I even tested a few cables that were known to have been crimped improperly and it was correct in which pairs were not connected.Published 1 day ago by QRA Computer Services
This is obsivoily not the best but I recommend it if you just are runnning couple ethernets/ here and there and want to make sure you crimped them properly. Read morePublished 6 days ago by Mike
