In my original review of the product, purchased from the first merchant and at around 10+ days of ownership, I stated that it was working just fine. The plastic material was of fair-to-equal quality compared to the original genuine-Apple adapter. Unfortunately, about 2 months later, it had started to fail. I suspect the reason had to do with the cable, which is thinner than the original genuine-Apple adapter. It could also be due to the fact that I have to plug/un-plug this unit 5x a week.
In any case, I decided to give the generic adapters one last try... This time ordering from HDE, since I saw a couple positive reviews. When I received it, I was pleasantly surprised that this one looked quite similar to the genuine-Apple adapter (I've uploaded a new product picture). The cable is noticably thicker. It has been working well so far and compared to my previous generic adapter, this one appears to provide a slightly better - clearer - picture.
*** UPDATE on 2/6/2011 ***
It has been over 9 months since I purchased my adapter from HDE, and yes, it's working (but with a caveat for some Macbook owners). I'm now posting an update to my original review because a recent Mac OSX system update to 10.6.4+ seems to have affected the function of all of my generic mini displayport adapters. After testing several from different retailers (e.g.Read more ›
If you are willing to save some money while running the risk of getting a defective product, I highly recommend this generic from HDE. (If not, get the one from Apple). As a side note, if you are having problems with your adapter, try restarting your computer with it plugged in. I was able to get my defective one to work this way while I was waiting for a replacement.
I love a good bargain as much as anyone, but I'm willing to shell out an extra $20 for the official Apple version even it if it is just 25% more reliable.
Sort of worked for a few months, making a usable but incredibly dim image even the monitor cranked up to maximum brightness with Dell LCD monitor and my MacBook Pro. Don't waste money, time, or landfill capacity on this. (Well, OK. If no one buys them, they still get landfilled, but don't waste packing material and petroleum transporting this useless thing.)
After it broke (and I, like others, hardly ever unplugged mine, maybe three times before it failed), I thought about getting the actual Apple adapter, but the reviews for that on Apple's website are decidedly mediocre. Plus $30 for something that Apple really should just ship with the computer is just asinine. Very obnoxious of Apple, so I refused to buy that similarly reviled piece of (more expensive) junk.
Found this minidisplay-port to DVI-D cable <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OBXHPC> and it's SO much better. Check your monitor for a DVI-D port and if it has one, don't bother with those useless adapters. Image quality is vastly improved with the DVI-D over VGA, too. Much much better than the adapter + VGA cable option in every way.

Worked, barely. The Mini-DP side of the cable rotates with respect to the rest of the cable, which puts stress on the wires inside. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Daniel Grobe Sachs
