This product did not work for HDMI input to RCA output on a DVD player to an older TV set.

The ONLY way to covert RCA or VGA to HDMI is with a special component that converts the signal from analog to digital.

I bought this because it's cheap but as the other review properly points out, this cable doesn't work.

I can't believe how naive i was when i bought this. Think about it. HDMI is Digital, RCA is analog... There is no conversion box in between the 2 ends. There is NO WAY this cord can work. I purchased it and tried, until i wised up and got some common sense. I plan on removing the cover to see how the seller spliced the wires together.

Again, to sum it up in one word..... Impossible....

Edit: Apparently this cable is only for CERTAIN applications that have a HDMI connection that can receive analog signals. The wire takes an analog output from RCA and sends the signal to an analog HDMI connector on a projector or old monitor. NOT FOR THE TYPICAL USE OF CONNECTING A LAPTOP TO AN HD TV.

Wish the description had a little more detail. Still rating 1 star until better description is given.

If you found this cable by searching for hdmi to component video or vga, then your search results likely included multiple converter boxes to accomplish the task you had in mind. Take responsibility for your own poor choice of not spending 5 minutes to discover that hdmi is digital and component/vga are analog.

Since this cable doesn't do what YOU wanted it to you might ask, "Why was this even created?" Here is one real-world answer:

The most practical use for this cable would be for retrofitting to a commercial LCD projector installation. Picture an older high school auditorium with hookups for a computer and a VCR running from a box on the wall to a box on the ceiling where a mounted LCD projector connects. The picture in your mind should include a 15-pin vga jack (monitor cable) and red, yellow, and white RCA jacks. If the school were to use a technology grant to buy a blu-ray player and new laptops with hdmi outputs as well as a new projector with an HDMI input, TWO OF THESE CABLES could be used to trasmit the digital signal through the existing wiring. Admittedly, it would not be ideal, but it would preclude the need to hire a contractor to install new cabling.

Based on some brief online research, here is a breakdown of the math: An HDMI plug has 19 pins = 1 pin that is not used + 15 pins on the vga cable + 3 pins in the center of the cables wired to the RCA jacks.

I hope for your sake you are reading this before hitting the purchase button. If it's too late, buy another cable and some female gender changers (1 vga and 3 rca) and try it out as an ad hoc hdmi cable.

I bought this because it's cheap but as the other review properly points out, this cable doesn't work. I was using it to connect my PS3 to my monitor as the page originally specifically mentioned the PS3 as a possible source and a computer monitor as a possible output but it didn't work.

Fortunately, the seller contacted me and gave me a refund since the cable wasn't what I hoped it would be. Thus, the seller is good but the cable is bad.

ok let me break this one down. UNLESS YOUR TV/MONITOR/DEVICE, that your plugging the HDMI end of the cable into has the ability to transmit in analog (VERY RARE!) THIS WILL NOT WORK NO MATTER WHAT! For those who do not get this it is very simple,HDMI is a digital signal and RCA/VGA are analog signals. (its like cats and dogs) in order for this to work you would need a signal converter box(expensive usually 70-120$). (If your in the U.S. remember when cable services made the switch to "digital" and everybody with old tv's had to buy converter boxes-SAME THING) HERE IS THE SOLUTION: For laptops,ps3's,xbox 360 or anything with an HDMI output. Purchase an HDMI to DVI converter seen here : [...] WHY? because DVI instead of VGA carries a "digital signal" not analog like VGA. If your monitor does not have DVI then it is too old and wont work. For RCA (yellow, red, white cables.) it is a different story because i have never tried it so i cant provide hands on info. All other reviews saying this works are BULL unless the reviewer possesses one of the very rare!, monitors that transmit analog through the HDMI port. in general (ITS A SCAM) ADDED NOTE: DVI does not support audio so just make sure you have some speakers around so u get some sound, also ensure that your monitor/tv is HDCP compliant or this wont work. If anyone needs help please reply and ill help u out. (if anything i said was incorrect please correct me and provide a legit reason why and think before you type)

Even though the HMDI and the VGA cable connected to my devices properly, the functionality of the cable did not work properly. I intended to use the cable to connect the HMDI device to my laptop and to connect to my DVD device with the VGA connectors, in order to display the contents of my laptop on to the TV screen. I was informed by a technician that this cable would work but it didn't. I was later told that both of my devices had to be digital in order for the device to work properly. Whatever the case, the cable did not work properly.
