The Owon HDS1021M is a handheld electrical test device that combines a 20 MHz, single-channel, handheld digital oscilloscope for viewing electrical signals with a manual- and auto-ranging digital multimeter for measuring AC and DC voltage to 400V, AC and DC current to 20 amp, resistance to 40 MΩ, and capacitance to 100 μF. The oscilloscope has maximum real-time sample rate of 100MS/s and a record length of 6,000 points for acquiring detailed waveforms. Its 18 automatic measurements such as period, frequency, and peak-to-peak enable an in-depth analysis of waveforms. Up to four waveforms can be stored in the internal memory. The multimeter has two ranging modes: manual, which allows the user to select the operating range, and auto, which automatically selects the appropriate operating range. The delta relative function allows a measurement to be set as a reference value and displays subsequent measurements as a positive or negative deviation from that value, and the data-hold function freezes a reading on the display to aid documentation. A continuity buzzer confirms that the circuit conducts electricity, and a diode check detects whether a circuit's diodes are working properly. Additional specifications include a rise time of 17.5 ns and various triggering features. The unit has a 3.5" color TFT (thin film transistor) LCD with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels for viewing waveforms and measurements. An oscilloscope is used for electronics applications such as product design, assembly lines, repair and servicing, and electrical engineering education, among others. A multimeter is an electrical testing tool for measuring multiple properties of an electrical circuit to verify proper operation or diagnose problems.

The unit has a USB port for connecting to a PC and includes Microsoft Windows compatible software for transmitting data and remote operation. It meets EN (European Standard) 61010-1:2001 safety standard, and is rated for CAT II installations to 400V, which covers energy-consuming equipment connected to a fixed installation, including household, office, and laboratory. It has European Conformity (CE) marking. Oscilloscopes are electrical testing devices used to verify the functionality of equipment that generates an electrical signal. Oscilloscopes measure the voltage of an electrical signal over time, and display the measurement as a waveform in a visual graph. The waveform shows the sweeps (or refresh) of voltage on a vertical (Y) axis, and the time on a horizontal (X) axis. Details of a waveform demonstrate the signal over time. Most oscilloscopes have two or four channels for inputting a signal. Some digital oscilloscopes offer more than four channels, allowing channels to be dedicated to specific signals and applications. Bandwidth is the maximum frequency of a signal that an oscilloscope can capture. A constant image will display if a signal is shown at a high frequency. Oscilloscopes may be analog, digital, or mixed signal. An analog oscilloscope directly displays an input signal as a continuous waveform, typically in a luminous phosphor on a cathode ray tube (CRT). A digital oscilloscope converts the input signal into a digital format and reassembles the waveform for display, typically on an LCD. This is a great little scope for the price. I couldn't find anything else comparable that didn't cost a lot more. It does everything it's supposed to. The screen is very bright and high contrast making it easy to read. The scope and frequency displays are very accurate. The manual was written by someone for whom English is a second language, but it covers all the details of operating the unit's functions adequately.

My only complaint is with the USB connection and software. If you want to use this with a PC then you're on your own. There's only 6 sentences in the user's manual section about it. Basically it just says to connect the USB cable and then install and run the software! The software on the provided CD wouldn't load at all on my Windows 7, 64 bit PC. It just gave an error saying that the software couldn't be installed properly.

Hunting around on the web I found a page on the company website at [...] which has PC software for download which does work.

The software is of minimal use. It's scan rate is very slow, updating only a few times per second from the scope to the PC. It's okay if just want to capture and freeze a waveform on the scope and then upload and convert it to an image file.

I give this scope 5 stars for it's quality, functionality, and price as a stand-alone handheld device, but subtracted one star from the five because of the PC connectivity and use issues..

This works pretty well. You would think, given what it is, that it would fall apart in a week, but it didn't, it is actually holding up, and working.

Pros:
Very cheap for its functionality as one portable unit.
Nice screen for the price.
The scope triggers quite quickly, considering its cost.
Battery life seems very good.

Cons:
Cheap build quality.
Plastic BNC socket - seriously, they couldn't afford a real BNC socket on a $300 unit? This is the part of its build quality that most concerns me, I seriously suspect the bayonet clips on the socket will very soon wear off rendering it's scope near useless without the application of tape or pertinently gluing the probe on. Also, don't plan on using a BNC cable from other equipment with a metal fasten, this is likely to just take it right off.
DMM accuracy - I have seen a $10 DMM with less voltage drift than this - I wouldn't trust this +/- 0.1V, which in many situations isn't a problem.

The bottom line is:
This really is very a poor quality product. For the price it is shameful to be honest (I had never SEEN a plastic BNC port before this arrived), but the price of reasonable quality DMM/scope combinations is just silly in general. It does provide a working low-frequency oscilloscope with decent enough triggering and screen to get something useful out it and it comes with a DMM useful if you don't need accuracy. My advice is though, if you aren't concerned with portability, get a PC scope for a 3rd of the price and a $10 DMM - both will exceed this unit easily in every possible situation and regard and will last infinitely longer, costing less in the process.

At first when I saw the price of this scope I thought it had to be junk. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. In this case you get more than you pay for. I brought this scope to my lab and it was more accurate than the 10000$ machines we had. Over all I am very happy with this purchase.

Does a fine job. You do have to consider the price. I've used a wide range of scopes for many years now. This is certainly not reference quality. But for the price it's darn good. Takes a little getting used to the menus in order to find all the functions. (such as changing time base) Once you get it figured out it's not too bad. I plan to use it for basic troubleshooting. Something quick and easy to get some waveforms. Comparing to a more expensive scope, it's basic accuracy on a 1KHz signal was just fine. I wouldn't really trust it for important measurements where time and amplitude accuracy are important, but it'll work just fine for everything else I think. Not sure how long it will last, but again, "for the price" the quality seems pretty decent. Note on the stars: if I were to compare it in an absolute world, it would probably get 2 stars against scopes that cost much more. For the price, it's almost 5 stars worthy, but you gotta be realistic here, it does have flaws.

i had a problem with internal telephone ports, suddenly failing. In this installation, the internal telephone connections are in close proximity to the cable TV lines. I was thought that we were having DSl and TV signal leakage that was being super imposed in the internal telephone lines. I bought this little scope to prove my theory. Once I went through the instructions, I connected the scope's probes to an internal telephone. I was amazed. Not only did the scope trace show the induced distortion, it showed the frequencies.

I hooked up the scope, plugged it into my PC and added an additional monitor. When the Cable people came into my office, they saw the triple display. The very next day they upgraded their equipment. Had I called in a Consultant, their fee would have been multiple times the cost of the scope.
