HEAVY TRUCKING: Every day a hundred diesel trucks lumber heavily out of the terminals of Pacific Intermountain Express, (P.I.E.) and onto the broad highways of the West. Over the main line east from Oakland, California they creep up the sides of the Sierras and Rockie, slowly backfire their way downhill and go drumming across the great plains to Chicago. Using a relay team of 10 drivers and traveling at an easy pace, P.I.E. takes loads up to 20 tons over the twisting 2,500 mile route in five days. Tex Houser drove the first leg, Cessna took over at Reno, Maxfield drove into Utah, Prout took Salt Lake run, Duffin drove to Rawlings, Wyoming, Nelson climbed the Rockies, Chergo went on to Kansas, Dalton made run to Kansas City, Thrasher crossed Missouri, Richards drove into Chicago. ..... 1947 LIFE Magazine Article, A5016.
