Book Description

Helper12 works as a Baby Helper in Pre Ward, the place where babies spend their first six months of life before they’re tracked for vocations and sent to training. She does her job well, and she stays out of trouble. But one day, the Sloanes, Society members who enjoy all the privileges of their station—family unit clearance, a private dwelling, access to good food and good schools—come to “adopt” one of the Pre Ward babies. The Director makes a deal and the Sloanes walk out with a brand new child.

They also walk out owning Helper12—the Director sells her to them, and there’s nothing she can do but go. At the Sloanes, Helper12 enters a world where people should be able to enjoy life—with high position and riches come the opportunity for individual freedom, even the chance to love—but that’s not what she finds. The Sloanes are keeping secrets. So is their biological son, Thomas.

Helper12 has some secrets of her own; she’s drawing, which is a violation, since Baby Helpers aren’t tracked for Art. And she’s growing to love the child she was bought to care for—at the same time that Ms. Sloane is becoming disenchanted with her impulse baby buy.

When all your choices are made for you, how do you make some for yourself? Helper12 is about to find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inventive, engaging dystopian YA read! December 22, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In a world of dystopian YA fiction, it's hard to find novels that are well-written and inventive in a way that hasn't been done before. Helper12 does that. I remember feeling excited by the beginning-- how Helper12 was assigned to be with babies and what this actually meant.

I liked the development of her relationship to the son of the household and the evils of his parents being revealed. It was well done.

I didn't give it 5 stars because the ending let me down. This book had drawn me in, but the ending was so easy and pat. I felt like more could have been done.

That said, it was well written and I enjoyed reading it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read June 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Normally I am hesitant to buy the cheaper books. Mostly because the editing usually isn't done well and grammer mistakes irritate me. This book, I am happy to say had none.
Helper12 is a dystopian novel that is very character focused. If you like dystopian books and want to read a good romance this is a great book. The thing that stood out most to me is that this book was just about two people trying to live in a flawed world. There is no battle where they try to overthrow their government. Or a hopeful tone of a better future as they join or start a resistance. It's just about two people and a baby becoming a family.
I completely loved the characters although Benna was a little alien to me. The baby was so cute and I liked that he was always in the story. Instead of just casually mentioned as the reason the love interests met.
All in all a good read and I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helper12: Great Read! Preview of a Possible Future? August 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is what dystopia is supposed to read like. Dark, delicious, plausible and heart-wrenching. If you don't shiver in relief that you don't live there, then the world isn't painted properly. Oh, you'll shiver in this one. You'll definitely shiver.

Our protagonist, Helper12, is just what her name implies: a Helper. She attends to children in the Pre-Ward, another chilling designation. These babies are still too young to be classified so they are Pre- rather than designated. But when they leave her care, they will become laborers, helpers, breeders or whatever other classification is deemed appropriate for them. Helper12, who we'll come to know by her secret name of Benna, was meant to be a Breeder but for one reason or another was reclassified, her tattoo clumsily replaced, as a Helper.

Benna is sold, along with a baby, to a wealthy couple who want another baby. So she, along with the baby, are swept away into a world much like we see it, and for her it is a miracle to be in such a situation. Unfortunately, the adopted mother isn't as enamored of the baby as she was on the day she bought it and Helper12 is in the precarious position of knowing her situation will go from bad to worse if the woman disposes of them. And this is the story within the pages of Helper12. A good story it is!

I found this to be a richly detailed and intriguing world, fully realized...and chillingly so...in the story. Since this is a stand-alone book, we're unlikely to get more from this world so it is well that it was so completely realized in the story. The concept of their rigidly controlled and singular lives is well thought out and very reminiscent of THX1138 in that way, though certainly more user friendly in execution. The divided lives of those who have freedom and those who do not is also well done and reminded me of Brave New World or 1984 in many ways, yet more modern in approach. We can almost feel the tension and worry Helper12 feels so the human element is very well done as well.

I give this five stars for a lot of reasons despite there being a few editing errors. Rich world building, compelling story, deep characters and a fine pace and reach more than make up for a mispelling or two. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would love to read another tale from this world...and yes, that is a hint to the author!

This book was a great read. The Hunger Games and other popular books always have a cliff hanger at the end and it's nice to be able to read a good book that doesn't leave you with... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it
It's an interesting futuristic sci fi novel, but more dystopian than traditional sci-fi, as it is about social dynamics as opposed to space or other science-oriented subjects. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable Read!
I enjoy dystopian fiction but sometimes the plot is so heavy that it becomes sad to read. This novel had joy and love and hope and suffering and confusion...all in one tale. Read more

The book is $5 which is fair for the quality.
It has somewhat handed-down dystopia ideas, but it's written well enough that it is still interesting. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars It was interesting
It was a good story, however the ending didn't have a great climatic end. Hence, why I only gave it 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story rather predictable
Wish this book was a bit longer, story seemed rushed and it could have been more in depth. The plot in general was well put together.
