I bought this set from a major brick and mortar store a few months ago (hey, I had a coupon) and I have been very satisfied with them so far. The larger knives, especially the Chef and Santoku knives, are very well balanced and they all are dangerously sharp. Two examples of just how sharp the knives are:

When opening up the set and unpacking everything, I had the Chef or Paring knife in my hand (can't remember which) and I bent over to pick up a piece of cardboard that had fallen on the floor. After tossing the cardboard into the empty box, I noticed that my sock felt wet. I looked and saw that my leg and sock were both red. Apparently, I'd touched my leg with the edge of the knife and it was so sharp it sliced me like a scalpel and I never even felt it. Example two: I ordered a 4 inch thick memory foam topper that I needed to cut to a custom size. I had a razor knife with a brand new blade in it and it was barely cutting the topper and making a mess out of it. I decided to try the 5.5" Paring knife, and it cut through all 4 inches of the foam like it was soft butter. My father, who was helping me, just stood there awestruck.

The stainless steel is German (a good thing) but the knives are assembled in China (not always a good thing). I'm not usually too keen on supposedly high-end items made in China, but you have to keep in mind that not all Chinese made stuff is junk. They DO have the ability to make top notch stuff over there, but when they do, they have to use the same expensive manufacturing techniques used elsewhere, so the the final product isn't that much less expensive by the time it reaches export markets. These knives do look to be top quality. I've had them for three months and can't find a single flaw in the workmanship to comment on.

Just received product and true to description handles are full bodied and ergonomically correct with good finish. Disparities and blemishes in finishing are minute. Blades are very sharp but expected the straight edged knives to have a more precise-machined look. (I might be comparing with the style of the Santoku.) Steel looks of good quality but that remains to be seen. Although assembled in China, steel is German. The larger knives are quite balanced making them easy to use for a prolonged time.
I was thrown off by the micro serrated style of the stake knives. I Expected straight blade but maybe asking too much.
The block was the biggest letdown by being so generic in fit but is of no consequence. The horizontal resting position of the knives in the block is attractive.

Overall a very good quality set at the sale price.

Although if I had to pay the full $400+ price, at this point in time, I don't feel I would see the full value.

I bought these for my wife for Christmas. She absolutely loves them! They are wickedly sharp, like nothing we've ever used before. The quality and craftsmanship is obvious at first inspection. She'll never need to buy another knife.

Larger knives made in China. Smaller knives made in Thailand. Nothing made in Germany -- by J. A. Henckels. The block loaded with knives is top heavy and can be tipped easily toward the user -- spilling all of the sharp knives. I cannot recommend this block set.

Arrived as promised--very nice set of knives. In the description, however, the block is considered a "piece." You don't get 17 knives.....

Just love them. Never had a really good set of knives before. Worth every penny I paid for them. Will never use cheap knives again.

Disappointed. I have bought J.A. Henckels before and they were great. These are not sharp at all, and are not up to the task. Do not buy this particular set. I wish I didn't.
