Book Description

February 2010
An accessible biography of Henry VIII by one of the country's leading Tudor experts.

Author's last book The Tudors brilliantly received: 'The best introduction to England's most important dynasty' DAVID STARKEY; 'Vivid, entertaining and carrying its learning lightly' EAMON DUFFY.

Dr Richard Rex is an acknowledged expert on the Tudors.

The future Henry VIII was born on 29 June 1491, the second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. This talented, athletic and temperamental man might have proved something of a handful to his elder brother, Prince Arthur, the firstborn, had he survived to wear the crown. But Henry's life was changed forever when Arthur died in 1502 and the course of English history took a very unexpected turn...

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but worth reading, November 26, 2010

This review is from: HENRY VIII: The Tudor Tyrant (Paperback)
At only 130 pages, this book is so short that it cannot really be called a biography of Henry VIII. It doesn't have end notes or even a bibliography, and provides only a swift summary of the main events of Henry's reign. Yet even for someone who has read dozens of books about the Tudor Age, reading it didn't seem a waste of time. Rex writes well, clearly and concisely, and the book does not appear to have any factual errors. It's also impressively illustrated, with 81 pictures, including portraits of Catherine or Aragon and Jane Seymour that I had never seen before.

Those wanting to read a proper biography of Henry VIII will not find what they're after here. But this book would make a good introduction for those who don't know much on the subject, and don't want a weighty tome that might bombard them with too much information at once. Even those who do know a lot on the subject will probably still enjoy it.
