Very Readable,
By A Customer
This review is from: HER LITTLE MAJESTY: The Life of Queen Victoria (Hardcover)
This book was very readable, enjoyable, and historically fascinating. It was not as indepth as one would expect of a monarch with such longevity or for a woman with such fascinating children. But for your history buff that doesn't have time to be a scholar this was the must read book about Victoria. It provided a glimpse of her personal and public life and showed the world what "Victorian" really meant.

Great for a quick over view...,

This is a small book for such a large subject. It keeps to the facts and indeed it does not overwhelm you with those. I found some of the expressions used in the book to be a little odd, almost as if the writer was trying to write in style that she thinks is "real" English.I enjoyed the book and it has made me want to learn more about this quite remarkable woman. In short ;read it and enjoy , but don't expect to be turned into an expert by the end of the book.

it was a book that I couldn't put down until I had finished it! It showed Victoria in a human light, and didn't shy away from her faults.

This is a very well-written and researched biography. Queen Victoria is vividly brought to life and her colorful era brilliantly conveyed. Quite an enjoyable read!

Superficial,

Not much more than a quick overview of the Queen's life. Try Giles St. Aubyn or Stanley Weintraub for more detailed and thoughtful accounts.

A good read!,
This review is from: Her Little Majesty: The Life of Queen Victoria (Paperback)
Like most reviewers, I found this delightful little volume a good read, without the detail one normally encounters in a biography. One gathers from this work that the the queen's unhappy childhood had a profound effect upon the rest of her life; including, in rather a perverse way, the relationship with her husband, whom she is said to have both adored and harassed.
I have to admit that I purchased my new copy for one pound in London (remainder!). I am doubtful if I would have paid full price. But a good read.

Superficial and uninspired,
This review is from: Her Little Majesty: The Life of Queen Victoria (Paperback)
I was hoping for a lot more from this book after reading other reviews and noting how many biographies of famous women Carolly Erickson has written. Frankly this book read like a student's history project, that is, essentially a time-line with only a small effort to truly express who Queen Victoria was. The book was not very captivating and I only finished it because it was the only book I had on an 8 hour flight. There are probably better biographies of the Little Queen out there.

The Queen is dead, long live the King!,
By Hugh M Frazer (Andrews, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HER LITTLE MAJESTY: The Life of Queen Victoria (Hardcover)
What a marvelous book! Oh to be a college freshman again and have this for summer history assignment! Is it presumptuous or what to put a vast historical panorama in 264 pages? But Erickson does it with great style befitting her intrepid subject. A word to our fictional freshman: be sure to look up the big words, be thankful there is an author not afraid to use them; don't try to remember the geneologies, time for that later; visualize that last chapter death-bed scene, unsurpassed in its poignant prose. Thanks, Ms. Erickson, for a great work.

Victoria's Secret,
This review is from: HER LITTLE MAJESTY: The Life of Queen Victoria (Hardcover)
This book is very well written. THere are many similies and metaphors which put you back into the life of Queen Victoria. It is an educational book, yet it reads like a story. It is most definetly not like most historical non-fiction books.

not much of a biography,
By Elizabeth B. (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Her Little Majesty: The Life of Queen Victoria (Paperback)
If you're looking for a serious biography of Victoria, this isn't the book you're looking for. The book focuses mostly on a lifetime of emotional turmoil rather than a lifetime of actions and accomplishments. I was left with an impression of a whiny, resentful, erratic woman who never accomplished anything of note other than producing a lot of children.
That said, the book was great for stimulating my interest in finding a good biography of Victoria. I'd love to find something that talked more about the time she lived in, the role of the monarchy in England at that time, and most importantly, what she did with her life. |
