I'm a 20 year old man who has always had an interest in robotics and steampunk things. So when I was trudging through the toy section of my Walmart and saw this neat Hexbug Spider I impulse bought one and hoped for the best. My hopes were met! This thing is neat... It is a two channel remote control creature with a very unique walking motion. If you or your kid are bored of remote control cars, helicopters, and planes, you may want to give Hexbug and their things a look. Spiders have 8 legs and this only has 6, but who cares? Also worth mentioning is that whichever way the little red eye of the Spider(which glows when the head turns...very cool) is facing is the direction the Spider itself will go. This is great because it means the Spider can make very sharp turns so don't worry about 8 year old Timmy crashing it or driving it off the tabletop. The durability of the Spider is very high since my klutzy self dropped it while carrying it a few times and no damage so that's good. Another good thing and slightly educational about it is that the internal wiring and motors on the Hexbug spider are kind of visible making children wonder how these work, making for some(with luck of course) future engineers and robotic experts.

BUT... There are unfortunately some negatives amidst all these positives. For one, The Spider sells for about 25 to 30 bucks. That can be expensive to some, but if you really want it like me, you'd put the money down. However, the biggest problem is the Batteries. AARRRGGHH The Batteries! The Spider itself runs off 3 AG13 Button cell batteries and the remote runs off of 2 button cell batteries.

For all of you who think the batteries died immediately....we bought this and LOVE it. The reason it appears the battery died is after 15 or so, it is designed to shut off by itself to SAVE the battery. So, you have to push the switch on the spider to "off", then back to A or B, whichever the remote is set to. Then, it works perfectly. Give it a try and see how much fun it is after that! Enjoy!! only reason it is 4 stars is it could be a little less expensive.

Let me start by addressing the complaints about short battery life and cost of replacements. If you pay for the "official" hexbug battery packs you will quickly blow through that inheritance but I was able to purchase 100 batteries (AG13 1.55v) right here on amazon for $6! That is enough to last the life of this little mechanical marvel. Is toy is an amazing piece of machinery. I am intrigued with all things robotic and little guy is something to marvel at as the legs seamlessly change walking direction as the upper "head" turns to guide the forward direction. I added some rubber pads to the tips of each leg to improve traction and to help silence the annoying clicking as it walks. I also did a custom army green paint job (Korean-war era semi-gloss olive drab to be precise!) I would highly recommend this product to all you geeky grown-up children out there like myself.

Purchased two of these units for my eight-year-old. She had seen these at a store back in the summer and wanted them, so I ordered two (so two could play at the same time) and gave them to her on her birthday. She was very excited when she opened them -- imagine the disappointment on a young girl's face when NEITHER of them worked fresh out of the box. One unit sort of responded, very sluggishly; the other: nothing. (Yes, I checked all remote channel settings, removed battery tabs, etc.). I went to Radio Shack to buy 10(!) new replacement batteries for these two units (very expensive! 5 batteries per unit/remote costs as much as the toy itself!), after which ONE unit now works. I don't know for how long. The second unit still does not respond in any way, regardless of channel setting or what batteries, old or new, are in the remote or unit. Dead on arrival. E-mailed HEXBUG to activate warranty, but they will only repair unit if you discover it is defective within ten days of shipment (impossible if you buy it earlier for a present as I did and only discover it is a shoddy product after opening)-- AND even if you do open it right away and find it does not work, YOU have to pay shipping both TO and FROM their facility for repair/replacement - regardless of the fact that it is they who sent out garbage in the first place. TERRIBLE company and product, in my opinion. Buyer beware.

We gave this to my daughter for Christmas, she really wanted it. It was on her list.

It really delivered. We paid less than $20 and yet it was played with more than any other toy. She took it to her grandparents house and two different cousin's houses and everyone wanted to try it. It was the most played with toy this Christmas, and in our house, that deserves some sort of reward.

It has this really weird way of walking, whichever way the red LED on the top points is the "front" and as you turn the top the spider runs in another direction. There is no real "front" legs or "back" legs.

Its kind of like an owl and a spider frankensteined together, the way the head just rotates and rotates and the legs send it in any direction without having to "turn around".

And with all those kids playing with it all day, the batteries lasted and not one kid complained about anything. Everyone thought it was super cool. Kids were using it to ram light objects off tables, or they were dragging a spoon around with the legs. They were scaring the moms by having it come up and touch their feet. They were coming up with all kinds of things to do with it.

Will it have much staying power? Will anyone play with it in a month? I doubt it. But, it was such a hit that I don't even care any more.

Anyway 5 stars because it was an over the top success for the last three days, and probably for a few more to come. I don't really care that much for it personally, but, it was certainly worth every penny.
