*** Unfortunately, this review is not about the performance of the Hard Drive. I wasn't even able to install them and test them out - Keep Reading ***

I had my suspicions about the great price on this hard drive but I figured I would try it out and see if I was wrong.

When I received my hard drives I looked at the serial numbers and decided check the warranty. Even though the drives had an April 2013 manufacturing date on them they were only showing a 2 year warranty. More correctly they were showing a warranty ending in 2015. I called up HGST and asked them about it.

I was expecting them to tell me that the drives were older drives that had been sitting around and to just use my receipt if I needed warranty service. That would have been fine if that was the answer. However that's not he answer I got. I was told that these drives were taken out of an external enclosure. Evidently drives that come out of an external enclosure are cheaper so people often take them out , repackage them and sell them for a gain. The problem with this is that as soon as the drive is out, the warranty is void.

Big problem here. I tried different ways to contact the seller, Oceanside Store, but it kept leading me over and over again to Amazon Customer Service. They, of course, told me to send them back. My concern is that there will be more of these getting sent out, probably even these, and people will be none the wiser till it's too late.

Be careful when you purchase drives that seem to be a good deal. Sometimes they are but often times there is something going on.

Go here to check out your warranty on this drive : [...] .. If it doesn't come with a three year warranty or it seems suspicious then give them a call.

I honestly don't know if it's Oceanside repackaging them or whomever they get them from. Either way. Look out.

Beware as another buyer commented about the drives and service from Oceanside. Received two drives today in cheap bubble wrapping and found out from HGST support they will not honor warranty on these drives if they fail. They are OEM repackaged and there are scratches on the side of the drives that appear to be previously removed from an enclosure or tight fitting drive bay. Can't understand how Amazon allows this 3rd party to sell these drives advertising a warranty and through their Prime service offering. I am sending back the drives.

I ordered 6 of these using amazon prime. They were sold by Oceanside Store. I installed them in my QNAP TS-870 Pro. Seemed to be working as expected. I was getting a little low on storage space, so I ordered another. This one was via amazon prime from Stellar Trading. It showed in a box wrapped in bubble wrap. The plastic wrapper that the hard drive was in was previously opened...seal cut open and no desiccant in the wrapper. When I read the label on the hard drive itself...it was a 4 TB Seagate Barracuda drive. ST 4000DM00. PN: 1F22168-568. Not what I ordered. I was not able to get the return processed online. I spoke with an agent from amazon and got the return and shipping label no problem. The agent said they would be checking into what was going on.

Then I read some of the bad reviews here on Amazon and realized that many have complained about the issue of these being torn out of external drive cases and sold as new with no warranty. I did not read where anyone had received a different drive though. That got me thinking about the other 6 drives I just installed. So, I went to the HGST website and went to verify warrant eligibility. All 6 drives serial numbers are "invalid serial". Toshiba tech support is closed now. I will have to call tomorrow to find out what is going on. I have a strong suspicion that these 6 drives have no warranty. I will follow up here soon.

I just got off the phone with HGST. All 6 serial numbers from the drives I bought were from external hard drive enclosures. He said there is no warranty since they were removed from an external case. I thought the sealed bag with the desiccant meant it was new. He said it is easy to get the equipment to seal up a hard drive in a bag. Amazons web site shows these as new with a 3 year warranty...

I purchased 2 of these drives at Microcenter and after reading another review here, I decided to call HGST and find out why the warranty was only showing 2 years instead of 3. Turns out, these drives were also removed from an external enclosure and repackaged. They are new and have never been used though, as the SMART data showed 0 power on hours. I have no issue with the drives themselves and they perform as expected. Just be careful and verify the drive has warranty.

If you're going to buy this hard drive from Oceanside Store, make sure you check the warranty through Hitachi when you receive it. The product description states a 3 year warranty, but the drive you get will almost certainly have a shorter warranty than that through the manufacturer and through Oceanside Store there is also a 1 year seller warranty.

I bought two of these drives on 10/21/13. After reading some reviews that Oceanside had sold drives that had no warranty (because they were taken from external drives which voided the warranty), I checked my drives' serial numbers on the HGST website ([...]). While my drive did have a warranty, it was NOT the three year warranty that was advertised. The website said my warranty expired in Oct 2015, thus giving me a two year warranty instead of three. I would have returned them but I did not discover this until my return period had expired.

As far as how they work, I put them into a Synology DiskStation 2-Bay Network Attached Storage device (DS213j) in a RAID mirrored configuration. So far they work fine, but it is mainly for backed-up data and I rarely access it. I am giving them two stars for the misleading advertising.
