Had the product for about 4 months. No problems until last week.
Very poor ventilation. The enclosure failed after four months. Pulled the drive out of the enclosure and put it into another empty one i had around using the same hookups and worked perfectly. There is probably some manufacturing fault with the circuitry on the connector side of things.

Do not purchase this drive. It died after two months of use. I have never had an external drive die so quickly before. It would not start up on any operating system and appears to be cycling as though it can not start up. I failed to research this product online before buying and that was my mistake. I hope my review will protect others.

The headline says it all. Broke the case open to try to salvage my data, plugged it into a SATA port and guess what??? The actual DRIVE is bad! Avoid this one like the plague. Never had a hard drive fail this quickly.

This is a hard drive that's used to save backups and old files so it's hardly used. It didn't long before it started having problems. The drive wouldn't spin. One time I put it in the freezer for 1/2 hour and it started working. Looks like it suffers from ventilation issues. Recently it died. It doesn't turn on and there's no light. Power supply is fine. I am going to take out the drive and use my own USB kit.
Next time I will check reviews first before buying a drive from a store.

I have you all beat. My gf jostled it-- never fell off of our table, but was wobbled when she tripped on the power cord, and that forced this drive to fail. ONE DAY. I had it ONE DAY.

This is the most delicate, untouchable, unusable, persnickety piece of crap I have ever owned and I wouldn't recommend it to someone unless I hated them.

I've been using this drive for 2 weeks and it works fine. It formatted as a single, 3 TB partition without any problems on my Linux machine, and I transferred 2 TB of data without a hitch.

I took off one star for the huge, obnoxious drive-access light, which flasehs "HITACHI" in bright white glowing letters. (Whoever thought this up should be forced to stare at it for hours.) Tip: use black P-Touch labeler tape to cover the whole logo except the final "I", and it looks like a normal LED. (http://www.amazon.com/Brother-White-Black-P-Touch-TZ335/dp/B00004TS3P/) This tape is great for similar uses, like covering big company "SAMSUNG" logos on your TV, etc. It comes off easily if you change your mind.

I purchased the 1TB drive less than two months ago. Out of the box the drive was very slow, and very noisy. First the drive started to disappear from My Computer. With every reboot I had to unplug the hard drive and reconnect it to get it to show in My Computer. I contacted Hitachi, and was told that was normal for the drive. I have never heard of having to disconnect a hard drive and reconnect it with every reboot. The drive completely died shortly after this unacceptable behavior started. The hard drive was less than two months old when it died. I had to pay to ship the drive back to Hitachi. This drive is a piece of garbage. Do yourself a favor; buy a decent hard drive. Western Digital has been very reliable for me. After dealing with Hitachi's customer service...I will NEVER buy a Hitachi product again.

Died after 6 months and it was rarely used to begin with. Do not buy this harddrive or any other Hitachi drive
