It's easy to use and set up.

I would have rated it 5 stars, but I was rather surprised by its size when I opened the package.

The XL500 is by far and away the best drive I've ever owned. As an amateur photography and aspiring musician, I do A LOT of downloading, editing, and saving on my laptop/desktop. I also am a bookkeeper by day, so all of my client's numbers are backed up there. This drive is incredibly quiet, fast, and seems to never run out of space. The specs are similar to other drives, but I've owned enough Hitachi to know that they are very focused on being Green, so power consumption is very minimal and thus, the spinning of the platters inside is so quiet. I'm also very confident with all the backup measures Hitachi takes with their programming to ensure data protection. I would be devastated if I were to lose any of my creative work, not to mention the bookkeeping files my clients entrust me with. Overall, this drive is unbeatable for the quality and value it provides. AND, it looks VERY sleek in black.

if you don't mind a tag along power-brick take this..no firewire either...WD has similar that are USB powered...the Hitachi soft indicator light is nice though...PnP - no software needed...seems to have it's own backup program...though i write my own .BAT file to do incremental backups of desired folders...reasonably quiet - not super quiet since it seems to have a fan [slots on side for air exchange].

UPDATE 9/2013: Well, it's been over 3 years and its going smooth and strong...the best part is it is silent and shuts off after some inactivity and then easily wakes up too! Very good.

These drives appear to be on the way out, which is a shame. I suspect that many are wooed by the attraction of drives that power off the USB port of your PC or laptop. This can be an issue if your PC has a small power supply like 200 - 250 Watts. There have been user reports of drive failures for lack of power. Remember, todays PC has lots of extra devices being used and powered by onboard power supplies. The second thing that attracts people is the Tetra bite capacity drives. I use this drive to store TV shows and movies from my Digital recorder. As it turns out, the unit can only work with 500MB drives or less, so a TB drive would be useless. At $40, it doesn't break the bank either. $/MB, it's cheaper than a thumb drive (USB).

In hindsight maybe bigger ones for similar money or faster ones, but this does a very decent job. USB 2.0, 5400rpm I think. Works well.

This Hitachi 500GB is the best HD I have ever owned. Although it is a bit larger than what I'm use to having it does the job and takes alot of abuse. I highly recommend this HD.

I bought the Hitachi external hard drive to back up my wife's new Imac which, although used only as a home computer, has a considerable amount of software installed and lots of pictures. I also use the Imac to store files from my HP laptop that I would not want to lose in a major unrecoverable crash. Having the external hard drive is yet another layer of protection for my PC. I hear the hard drive running periodically (a low hum), and on Time Machine can see the backup folders on the desktop. But, I have not yet needed to actually take anything off the Hitachi. If the day ever comes when I need the stored data on the Hitachi to recover from a crash, I'll be able to comment further on that type of task. For now, all I can say is that it is backing up reliably on its set schedule -- and I hope I never need it to rescue me from an Imac meltdown.

I had been planning on getting an external hard drive to use as a backup device for some time... I finally purchased this one. The set up was easy enough and it backed up all I needed. I kid you not, the next afternoon my wife opened an email with a virus and our Hard drive crashed upon rebooting. I did a factory recovery disk and used the great Hitachi hard drive to restore all my pics and documents. Love it, it's easy and I will recommend this to others.
