This is a pretty good tortilla maker, but I did have to develop a better technique to get the tortillas as thin as I like them to be. Just an initial press down and holding there doesn't get it quite thin enough, so I rock the handle/press up and down, gently pushing the tortilla out.

Since it is aluminum, I didn't think this would be that tough. I wanted to buy a heavier one than this one, that my wife picked out, but this is quite nice. We can take it with us to other houses, etc. Good stuff. Much easier than rolling out by hand, but now I am experimenting by flatting it with just my hands. It does prevent over working for flour tortillas, and corn is easy. We like to use some parchment paper between the press to reduce stick. We re-use the paper for weeks, since it's wiped down and only has corn masa and water on it.

We love Mexican food, especially tacos. We used a corn tortilla recipe that I got off of the internet, which was 2 cups of masa herena, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. oil (optional) and about 1 1/2 cups very warm water. You blend all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl by hand until the mixture is the consistency of cookie or play dough. If it the mixture is crumbly and won't hold together in one ball it's too dry, add more water a tsp. at a time. If the mixture sticky and sticks to you hands, then it's too wet, add more masa. Once you have the mixture to the right consistency, wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest on the counter for at least 30 minutes. Do not put it in the refrigerator. While the tortilla dough is resting, take a standard Zip Lock sandwich bag and cut off, cutting as close as you can the zipper part. Then take a sharp knife and split out the rest of the sandwich bag, so you are left with 2 equal size pieces of plastic. You may use a quart or gallon size bag and cut them down, but the sandwich size works best. The sandwich size bag once done as directed, is the exact size that will fit the tortilla press and the sandwich size bag is more pliable than the larger bags, which makes for easier handling. Once your dough has rested, preheat a Comal, which is what we use or a large cast iron skillet or griddle to medium high heat (no oil, use dry). While you're preheating your cooking vessel, take the dough and form it into balls about the size of golf balls and set aside, covered with some damp paper towels to keep them from drying out.Read more ›

since i've had to go gluten free, i've cut out bread and decided to replace it with tortillas. rollling them out with a rolling pin? that wasnt going to happen. so i ordered this tortilla press. it does its job very well. the tortillas are small and tend to be thinner on one end than the other, but i dont care.

remember to press the tortilla dough between two quart-size plastic baggies--dough on the press itself will make a mess; and wax paper tends to absorb the moisture from the dough and tear.

i like that it's small; there is no room in my kitchen for one of those big wooden square ones that are appliances in their own right. otherwise i'd buy one of those.

One thing I was shocked as soon as I saw it, was how small it looked in person.
But that is to be expected, given the dimension, but still it was s shocker.

But, once I started using it, I was surprised as to how quickly and efficiently I was able to make the Tortilla.

We used whole wheat to make the dough, so it was not real smooth as we would usually make.

But still this press managed it well.

There was a suggestion here or in some other press review, the plastic cover technique.

That works wonders, who ever thought of that, you deserve an applause.

Operation:

With a cut open zip lock bag, spary / spread a lil oil on the inside.

Keep the rounded dough at the center of the plastic cover and place them in the press.

Press it once, rotate the ziplock 180 and press it again.

Viola!!! perfectly thin, easily detachable and even thick tortilla (roti) is ready for cooking.

I used this tortilla press to make meat pies. They look like a turnover pastry. In the past I would roll out the dough and it would take all day long to get them done. This press worked great. It cut my time in half. Since I didn't want the dough to be as thin as a tortilla, I pressed it lightly, turned it 180 degrees and pressed lightly again. Just perfect. I did take the advise of previous reviewers and used a plastic bag on top and bottom. It was easy to pick up the plastic with the dough, fill it, crimp it, peel off the plastic and move on to the next one. Good value.
