Product Description

This design is perfect for powdering herbs and crushing pills, as the pestle spans the entire width of the mortar. The workmanship here is excellent ¿ the HIC 571 and 571C have been the same quality product from the same manufacturer for 20 years. This is the original flying saucer mortar & pestle. When developed 20 years ago, HIC nicknamed this the flying saucer for its unique shape and design.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for spices, November 6, 2008

This is a great design for crushing spices and herbs, or any time you need crushed black pepper. It doesn't retain flavors, and is easy to clean. I find it easy to use, and gentle on the wrists. It's also small and, at $6.99, quite cheap.

It doesn't turn things into a powder well (that's for a grinder) or make guacamole or pesto (a much larger mortar and pestle is needed); if that's what you're looking for, you need a different gadget.

Maybe I'm just not that good with a mortar and pestle, but I find it difficult to crush small-seed spices with this item.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Fit, April 21, 2009
This review is from: HIC Porcelain Flying Saucer Mortar and Pestle (Kitchen)
The mortar & pestle set arrived promptly, but the shape of the pestle face bit not fit well with the mortar bowl.
