If you are interested in purchasing a mortal and pestle, and wish to use it for anything, do not purchase this item... it is only meant to be decorative... I learned the hard way after washing it and the paint wore away... a beautiful little set, but only that.

It is pretty, but small and doesn't work very well. You would be better off getting a little bigger one that is heavier. The wood doesn't seem to be a very effective crushing tool.

It's very nice looking, but a bit small. I don't think it's to be used every day. Only for show.

I got this as a gift (from a local store charging more than double this price btw!) and I was so excited! Then I actually tried to use it. Poo-poo on that! It didn't work very well (the inside is very slick) and the spices just ended up scratching teeny flecks of paint/wood off into my blend!! Now it just sits there looking pretty... which is about the only use for it!

I bought this, and I know I'm only going to use it for decoration because the colors are so beautiful...I would never forgive myself if I messes it up. I was surprised when my 25 year old son commented that it was pretty. I have others, and for the price you can't beat this.

This is very tiny and would never work for my purpose -- will be adding to my kitchen decor not my kitchen tools

Very pretty but smaller than I expected. I don't think it was 3 inches. It was a gift, the receiver was happy

It's so beautiful I keep it out as an art object. But whenever I have to grind up salt that has caked, or powder sugar crystals, it does the job nicely.

This is great for small jobs...a couple of garlic cloves and some herbs and spices. Not much more will fit. It is perfect for crushing up vitamins and other medications.

The version I got didn't look too much like the picture, other than the basic pattern. I received one with a tangerine-y lighter orange being the predominate color. It's still quite pretty, and I got it for decoration, but it doesn't match my kitchen as much as I'd anticipated. I expected more red, and that was one of the least used colors. So, I consider this a good purchase, but if you're thinking of purchasing based on the image, the item you receive might have a different palette.
