Was looking for a mortar and pestle for the kitchen as I'm looking toward grinding more whole spices. After doing some research and pricing out a few sets, I opted for this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars May be I got defective piece !?!
One of the mortars (3.5" diameter mortars) broke just after a week. I used it for nuts (almonds and walnuts) and hand washed it everyday.

Was looking for a mortar and pestle for the kitchen as I'm looking toward grinding more whole spices. After doing some research and pricing out a few sets, I opted for this one.

This set is comprised of three mortars and three pestles. The largest mortar is 4.75-in outer diameter (OD), 4.25-in inner diameter (ID), about 2-in tall; the middle mortar is 3.5-in OD, 3-in ID, 2-in tall; the smallest one is 2.5-in OD, 2-in ID, 1.5-in tall. Each mortar is thick and heavy (seems to be well built) -- more importantly, each mortar has un-glazed porcelain on the inside (which is very important for grinding spices, as the unglazed porcelain is rough and helps to "grab" the item to be ground).

The pestles are well sized for their respective mortars and are solid in construction (i.e., not hollow). Like the mortars, they are left un-glazed on the grinding surfaces.

Overall, I am happy with this set and would recommend it. First of all, the price: I paid $10.99 for the set - not bad considering a single mortar/pestle can cost much more. Secondly, the construction - these mortars/pestles are heavy for their size, solid in construction, and well finished. Thirdly, this set is porcelain, and is un-glazed on the grinding surfaces, which is superior to wood, metal, or even marble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product at a great price, January 3, 2007

I shopped around all my local discount stores and drug stores and could not find this item at most, or when I did, it was an overpriced arty (not functional) version.

This set was less expensive than the single mortar and pestle I was able to find (which was only one - they're very hard to find)and of much better functional quality (I believe someone else mentioned the non-glazed interior, which keeps stuff from sliding around; that is, easier to pulverize with the pestle).

I'm very satisfied with this product and highly recommend it.

I bought this mostly for the smallest mortar, to grind up the dog's pills. Works better than an electric grinder, and it's faster. Excellent value!

Even after reading all the good reviews, my expectations remained low for this relatively inexpensive set. However, I was very pleased with the heavy duty, well made porcelain of these mortar & pestles. I bought them for my three-year-old who loves to help in the kitchen, and she can grind spices with the best of them! Of course, they're great for adult hands as well. I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this set to anyone in the market for some absolutely terrific mortar & pestles.

These mortar and pestles are used mainly for crushing perscription medicines. They work very well for this purpose and are great for traveling, since they are light weight. An excellent product.

I like that you get three different sizes for what you would pay for one mortar and pestle retail. You can use each one for a different purpose if you were afraid of cross contamination. They are ceramic, but very sturdy and heavy. It is a good product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks nice -functions well, December 23, 2007

We go through a lot of pill crushers and you simply can't beat this set. I had a broken pestle but Amazon's no-hassle replacement process took care of the problem. It is made in China and it could well use slightly better packaging. Other than that, it was money well spent and a joy to own.

This review is from: HIC Porcelain Set of 3 Mortar and Pestle White (Kitchen)
Cheaper than many of the single units you can buy this is quite a value. I bought it for the large mortar & pestle because I smoke meat and make my own rubs and it works wonderfully! the non glazed inside and end of the pestle work excelent for mashing many things. I mainly use it for a paste of garlic, pepper, oil & salt and it does the job.

the mortar is a comfortable size to hold in one hand while using and the curve of the pestle and the curve on the corners on the mortar are a perfect match.

I also like the fact that is is white which makes it easier to see your progress.

highly reccomend to anyone. even if you don't intend to use all of them it's best to have this around and they fit nicley inside each other.

This review is from: HIC Porcelain Set of 3 Mortar and Pestle White (Kitchen)
I got a set for me and one for my sister. The base and the pestles are rough enough to capture the materials being ground and keep a good grip while directing power to the tip.

One thing that's not great for me is that I have large hands and the length of the pestles is such that I wind up rubbing my fingers along the edge of the mortar bowl as I grind. This is just uncomfortable, but the only thing bad that I've come across. The weight is great, and it has good solid contact.
