Book Description

November 2005 Hidden Places of the Lake District & Cumbria
This is the 7th edition of the very popular Hidden Places of The Lake District and Cumbria. The cover, page layouts and maps in this edition have been completely redesigned to produce a very attractive and easy-to-use travel guide covering the Lake District and Cumbria. The book is printed in full color and includes detailed directional maps and eye catching photographs. It is also packed with places of interest, places to stay and places to eat and drink full details of which are contained in a handy separate section. The Lake District is renowned for its impressive mountain scenery but it also offers visitors green rolling hills, fast flowing rivers, deep lush forests and of course the enchanting and languid lakes. The delightful county of Cumbria in which the Lake District resides is England's second largest county, but surprisingly has a relatively small population of only 490,000 people which is only slightly more numerous than the city of Leeds. Apart from the Lake District, visitors to Cumbria will also find gentle moorland, craggy coastal headlands and scattered woodlands as well as a fascinating history and cultural heritage.

The cover of the new edition incorporates an eye-catching photograph of Ullswater near Mossdale Bay in the Lake District.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is particularly enjoyable because of its easy narrative style that does not prevent it from packing in a lot of information. It remains a useful addition to a guide book collection, for local people as well as visitors" - The Westmorland Gazette "Easy to read facts on the more interesting and unusual aspects of each town and village visited with clear directions to places and easy to use locator maps" - Grange Now "It's a wonderful and useful book. They've listed all the popular tourist spots with clarity and detail. Its well laid out in full colour and is comprehensively indexed. The writing is sharp and concise. This is a must-have publication for locals and tourists" - Whitehaven News

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money, July 23, 2006

Don't be fooled by this so-called "book" -- one quarter of the space is taken up with cleverly-distinquished ads for guest houses and the like. If you didn't read the fine print, you might be fooled into thinking that the author was recommending these places, but they paid to be there.

The rest of the text is pretty basic, and not very detailed. The Rough Guide to the Lakes District is MUCH, MUCH better -- better researched, more detailed, and more objective.

I have purchased 5 books to help me with an upcoming trip to the Lake District and this is the one book I would have passed on. The book has commercial advertisements which detract from the book. Also, the restaurant and hotel recoommendations are sparce. Skip this book and buy Rough Guide instead.
