I just recently got into Whitecross and found them to be so much better than Stryper. In fact, I like them so much, I purchased all of their albums! They definitely rock harder than Stryper and sound a lot like Ratt. This album is not their best, but is an excellent album full of diverse songs. "Without Your Love" is the standout track for me. It has a great rhythm, great guitars, serious rock attitude and is one of the best Whitecross songs they have ever done. "Coming Home" follows this track on the album and rivals Cinderella's version of the same title. "My Love" is one of their best power ballads with some great guitar solos. "Long Road Home" is another good rocker. "Gonna Keep On" and "I Shout" are decent songs but not my favorites off the album. "In America" is a unique acoustic ballad worthy of mention. Overall, this is definitely an album worth owning and is in their top five for sure.

Those who don't know - Whitecross is one of the best bands in Christian rock scene. It's music is near Ratt. This album is one of their best ones. There's great rockin' tracks like the title track, "My Love", and "Dancin' in Heaven". However, the peaceful ones "In America" and "I'm Askin' You Today" are showing the great, soft side of Whitecross. It's amazing how there guys can play and sing so emotionally. The instrumental track "Overdrive" is an interesting one. The only track in this album that I don't like so much is "I Shout". It is too simpel. Whitecross rocks still, and this album is almost perfect!

I am a Whitecross fan who owns and loves the first four CDs by this Christian heavy metal band, but I was greatly disappointed with this fifth album "High Gear" and everything that came after it. The first four albums were great Christian hard rock/metal music, but the "High Gear" CD was a wimpy pop rock CD.

High Gear was the culmination of original metal guitar work when metal bands in all genres were degenerating into generic riffs. The vocals were excellent. My only criticism was the mix...the bass-player was mixed out too much (sound engineer probably ran it through a compressor for cheap stereos). To top off the excellent music, the message was unique among the Christian bands. I saw them live when they did this tour...let me tell you, they rivaled any band I've seen: Petra, Ozzie, White Zombie, Type-O-Negative, etc...Christian and non-Christian, Whitecross was king. I've noticed that Rex Carol isn't with them now...but his guitar work was par none...even if he was a grumpy guy. |
