Installation into my Dell 17R SE (7720) was a breeze. parts-people.com has loads of great Dell repair videos on youtube. Replacement of the bezel that came with the drive for my laptop's non-standard drive bezel was also quite simple.

Windows 7 Professional installed the drivers automatically and device manager shows the drive as "MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ260AF SCSI CdRom Device". I assume it's a Matshita drive branded as Highding? Panasonic appears to also use the UJ-260, but I'm not sure how the "AF" suffix makes this drive different.

The drive seems to be of decent quality. It definitely feels more solid than my previous drive (well, as solid as a slim laptop optical drive can feel, I suppose). The eject of the drive and initial recognition of an inserted disc are both pretty quick. More so than my previous drive. YMMV.

I have yet to attempt to burn any discs but I have ripped a blu-ray disc using MakeMKV. I was able to rip/convert about 40GB at roughly 2x. That's slower than the advertised read speed of 6x (27MB/s), but also includes the conversion to MKV. I'll need to pay closer attention to the true read speed when ripping my next blu-ray.

Overall my initial impression of the drive is good, but subject to change as more of it's functionality is utilized and tested.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: After some additional investigation and testing, I've discovered two items that make this drive much more of a disappointment then I had first believed. 1) Matshita drives appear to be riplocked. This means that when ripping discs 2x is the best you'll see when using this drive. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riplock).

Find "how to install" video on line as the directions that came with it were incomplete and poor. Nevertheless I gave it 5 stars because it was a great price, easily installed and does what I wanted.

Delivery was prompt, no waste in packaging but adequately packaged to protect unit. Had to change bezels, but the instructions were provided with text and pictures. It works fine in my Dell Inspiron 7720.
