2.0 out of 5 stars History Book Requires that You Already Know the History January 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought this would be an easy introduction to the history of India. Instead the author threw out a continual string of names and places without background, assuming you already knew them. If you buy this book, make sure you get in for your e-reader, as you'll need the Wikipedia link to progress.

3.0 out of 5 stars For The Serious Student June 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very detailed history for serious study. This will not suit the casual reader, too difficult. But it is very useful for those readers with the time and background, a very good history.

The book was written a long time back..even before the discovery of the Indus Valley civilization. Nonetheless, an excellent introduction to the ancient history of the country drawn from the Vedas and other writings including Buddhist sources

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book February 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I came to this book after watching a BBC documentary series on the history of India - and am glad I did.

It gave me a better understanding of the early evolution of Indian thought and society, and it also introduced me to ancient texts that I knew the names of but never really knew what they were all about.

For a scholarly work like this, it would have been helpful to have an Index, Bibliography and some maps included. But even without these, the book is a great read and of wonderful value to anyone with a serious interest in the early history of India and its peoples.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ancient India history - worth reading April 26, 2013

A good history, typically a little bland - but well worth reading if you are looking for an inexpensive history of ancient India.
