4.0 out of 5 stars War Stories: Three in One..., February 24, 2011
This review is from: HMS Marlborough Will Enter Harbour (Paperback)
"H.M.S. Marlborough Will Enter Harbour" is actually a collection of three novelettes by British author and Royal Navy veteran Nicholas Monsarrat. Best known for the maritime classic "The Cruel Sea", Monsarrat here provides three engaging stories from the Second World War.

"H.M.S. Marlborough Will Enter Harbour" is the gripping adventure of a Royal Navy sloop, torpedoed and crippled near Iceland. The logical course of action would be to abandon ship, take to the lifeboats and rafts, and hope for pickup. Yet her intrepid captain, for the most personal of reasons, commits the surviving crewmembers to a desperate struggle to bring the ship to a friendly port.

"Leave Cancelled", which was also published as a separate novel, is the touching memoir of a honeymoon cut short to just 24 hours. A British Army officer, alerted to an overseas deployment, elects to spend those 24 hours with his new bride, racing to build a lifetime of memories in a single night in wartime London.

"Heavy Rescue" follows the fortunes of a crew of rescue workers, preparing for the blitz in wartime London. Their job will take them into bomb-blasted neighborhoods, the last hope for survivors trapped in the wreckage of their own homes.

"H.M.S. Marlborough Will Enter Port" is an entertaining sample of Monsarrat's talents as writer. It is highly recommended to his fans, even in used condition.
