Eclectic But Essential,
By ChaseTheDragon (Hawaii) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HOLLAND, JOOLS - LATER...LEGENDS (DVD)
I stumbled across this DVD while picking through the carcass of Tower Records. What an absolutely fantastic, if eclectic, mix of artists. The stunning -- and ultra RARE -- performance by Jeff Beck is worth the price alone. But the clips of Joe Strummer (Miss ya SO much, Joe, R.I.P.) The Pretenders, Wille Nelson, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, George Benson, the great Solomon Burke and Whitlock/Clapton are jaw-droppingly fantastic. This DVD is also notable for Patti Smith taking back the Night from the mushmouthed Natalie Merchant and the Rev. Al Green showing why he is simultaneously one of this planet's most gifted and most idiosyncratic singers. All performances were taped between 1993 until 2003.
The complete track listing: Paul McCartney - Brown Eyed Handsome Man Joe Strummer - London Calling Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues Pretenders - Kid Dr. John - Creole Moon Bryan Ferry - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? Georgie Fame - Yeh Yeh Patti Smith - Because The Night Leonard Cohen - Dance Me To The End Of Love Paul Weller - A Town Called Malice Dusty Springfield - Where Is A Woman To Go Al Green - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart Ronnie Spector & Divine Comedy - Don't Worry Baby Willie Nelson - She Is Gone Elvis Costello - ( I Don't Want To Go To ) Chelsea Robbie Williams - Suspicious Minds Solomon Burke - Cry To Me Tom Jones - Crazy Arms Jeff Beck - Brush With The Blues Page & Plant - Gallows Pole Pete Townshend - Magic Bus Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley Is Crazy Blondie - Heart of Glass George Benson - On Broadway Bobby Whitlock & Eric CLapton - Bell Bottom Blues R.E.M. - The One I Love Stevie Winwood - Gimme Some Lovin' Lou Reed - Sweet Jane Roger McGuinn - Eight Miles High Tony Bennett - All of Me The Kinks - Til The End of the Day Ian Dury - Sex and Drugs

If you like more than a few of these artists, I recommend this highly. Highlights include Cohen, Spector, Strummer, Pretenders, Nelson, but all are good.

For those who don't get British television (me included), this was something new: a look at the some of the highlights of long-running show hosted by Jools Holland. I'm guessing Holland has had a long-running music show with weekly guest, centered around rock `n roll.
Anyway, it gave me an opportunity to see some people I've never seen performed as this DVD has over 20 performers filmed over the years. Everyone should have a least a half dozen songs they really like in here. My personal favorites, for either the great song they did or the fact it was fun to finally seem them perform, were: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Beck, Robert Plant/Jimmy Page, Bob Diddley, R.E.M., The Kinks and Ian Dury. Of that group, I think Bo Diddley's number was the most fun. Somone mentioned you can only see this in Region 4. Well, I live in Region 1 and saw this and the disc played just fine.

Along with Party, this is the best of the Jools Holland shows for those who remember soul music and '60s heroes.

NOT "ALL REGIONS",
By Old Rocker (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HOLLAND, JOOLS - LATER...LEGENDS (DVD)
Even though Amazon advertises this as being for "All Regions" it is for Region 4. I had to change my DVD player from Region 1 to Region 4 (Australia). Warning: It is only possible to change regions a couple times. After that your DVD player will be permanently set at whatever region you set it to when the device stops allowing the switch. All that having been said I enjoyed all the performances but I don't think it's worth $30 sum dollars especially since there is the Region issue.
