5.0 out of 5 stars Great safe for the money
Went to the home improvement store searching for a basic safe that fits in a standard 2x4 wall. Everything was around $100 or more. This was simple the best deal and arrived quickly and installed easily.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good item but the Screws SUCK
I was pleased with the heavy gauge steel and how the cabinet mounts flush to the wall. There are a couple of issues, however. First, the lag screws provided are cheap, cheap, cheap. I am not the strongest person but I ripped the head right off the first one. Then another, and another. That's right, I broke 3 of the screw heads clean off. fortunately, I was able to...

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for, November 17, 2009

This review is from: HOMAK WS00017001 High-Security Steel Wall Safe (Tools & Home Improvement)
I wanted a small safe to secure my documents better than I could in a nightstand. A local safe store had a small "Buddy" safe (very similar to this) for a hundred dollars. I was very pleased to find HOMAK WS00017001 at Amazon for less than 1/3 of the price the safe store was asking. This safe offers enough space to store documents and some jewelry, and installs flush with the wall providing some extra security by being attached to the studs.

The installation was straight forward: marking and cutting the wall and inserting the safe took only about 10 minutes. But the rest of the installation was a little more challenging. The safe is small inside, so, after marking the location for the pilot holes in studs, I had to remove it out of the wall to drill the holes, because the drill did not fit inside the safe. Also, using a wrench to tighten screws was a bit difficult because of the space limitations, and I scuffed a couple of my knuckles.

There are four holes, one at each corner of the flange, I put included screws through them, but heads stick out about 1/8". I wish HOMAK made these four holes a bit smaller and countersunk and included some long flathead security screws, to make the installed safe almost completely flush with the wall. In addition, I found the operation of the lock to be unintuitive - it unlocks by turning the key away from the hinge. I tried to change this by rotating the lock, but it did not work - there was no position in which the lock would operate the way I wanted it to.

Overall, HOMAK WS00017001 is exactly what I was looking for, and I'm very happy with this product.

This is not going to stop a burglar with five minutes and a few basic hand tools, but is a good inexpensive way to keep firearms, etc. away from children and other visitors. The hinge is on the outside of the door, and would be pretty easy to defeat with a punch, hammer and pair of pliers. So this isn't a really high security set-up, but it's great for the purpose I mentioned.

4.0 out of 5 stars great for hiding, not for securing, January 28, 2009

good little lock box that was very easy to install, it was just difficult to find a suitable place for it where the studs were the right distance apart.
You could open this box in 2 minutes with a screwdriver/crowbar or hammer, so its just a good box to hide in a wall, behind a picture or in a closet.

This is a nice little wall safe. First, the price is right. Second, it is nice quality with sturdy construction. Comes with two tubular keys. The key to this safe I think is concealment. If you did not know it was there then it has done its job. If a thief wanted in, it would be no problem with a prybar. I use it to store a handgun. I have mounted it in a closet wall hidden by a pile of clothes. Installation took about ten minutes. Used a utility knife to cut the dry wall and drilled six screws into the studs from the inside of the safe then also some long screws into the studs from the outside of the safe into the four holes that can be seen from the front. The safe sits flush against the wall and looks good after installation. Actually kind of looks like a utility box from the outside. It would be flat enough to hang a picture in front of it if you wanted to. I plan on buying a couple more for additional storage around the house.

4.0 out of 5 stars WAll safe, January 30, 2010

Good for the price. This safe is not sold as a high-security bank vault, and that is not what you're getting. What you do get is an inexpensive, well-hidden safety box for valuables. The key lock, as I said, is not impenetrable, as neither is the door, but the cost stands for the product. If no one knows it's there, it can't be broken into. I simply hid mine behind a picture, and it was hidden beautifully. It was fairly simple to install, though the hardware supplied with it was inadequate because of the type of construction, so I needed to replace the mounting screws. All in all though, it's a great deal for the money, so long as you aren't wanting an elaborate combination lock or a place to store The Hope Diamond.

The safe has good weight. It can be opened with a crowbar, but hidden behind a dresser, picture, or in a closet the safe will easily store a handgun, space magazine, passports, and have leftover room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homak High-Security Steel Wall Safe, September 4, 2008
This review is from: HOMAK WS00017001 High-Security Steel Wall Safe (Tools & Home Improvement)
I recieved my safe tonight from UPS and it was installed within an hour. Very simple design and even came with the lag bolts to bolt the safe to the studs on each side. It is surprisingly heavy duty for the price. Hide it though. Highly recommended for a hidden, simple safe.

This review is from: HOMAK WS00017001 High-Security Steel Wall Safe (Tools & Home Improvement)
This safe is great for hiding behind a picture or artwork on your wall. Perfect if you have kids and do not want them to be in danger or asking about what is in that safe you have under the bed or in the closet. Keep your children safe and feel secure knowing that you can access your weapon with ease. Great price and I received free shipping. You can't go wrong.
