Review

Publishers Weekly says:
"The author delivers engaging characters and a charming spin on an old plot in this mildly spicy contemporary romance.  Hardworking Chicago advertising exec Jake Randall travels to his tiny hometown -- Faythe, Wisconsin, which he'd left years earlier after escaping his abusive father -- to help his elderly Aunt Tillie repair her aging Victorian house.  Upon arriving, he finds Tillie has died and a familiar face is now living in her house: divorcee Cory Richards, a high school friend.  Matchmaker Tillie has one more surprise in store:  Jake and Cory both are inheriting half of her home, but to earn it, the two must live there together for three months.  Soon, Jake's feeling much more than friendship for the sweet nurse, but can he dare hope she feels the same?  For her part, Cory's been kicked in the face by love as an adult -- but believed Jake to be out of her league since they were high school students.  The author deftly builds a believable plot and significant emotions as Jake and Cory struggle to define what their past means -- and what their future may be.  While the prodigal son returning to his small town and garnering the local girl is a long-used and familiar strategy in contemporary romances, this author proves to be a master of rising above the usual stereotypical romance elements, creating a believable plot and characters readers root for from page one.  Enjoyable and fresh."Publishers Weekly

From the Author

Dear Reader:

I love happily-ever-after stories, whether in books or on the big screen screen. But, I tend to like ones that have more going on than the romance, so my stories do tend to be filled with secondary characters who have their own story lines. In the writing world, we say "there are lots of subplots." I hope you enjoy them as much as I had writing them.

When I was first working with the idea for HOMECOMING, I decided I wanted to have "lots of cats." I cut out cat pictures from magazines and I ended up with nine distinct cats with very different personalities. It was fun creating them as characters! I'm also kind of a nut for cat pictures, and I'd love it if you'd email me yours: mail (at) janetwellington (dot) com.  I just might use them in a future Facebook post!!

I also love wounded heroes and when I was working with Jake's character, I decided to give him a secret.  Cory is my Cinderella character--one I've always wanted to write. I love love love the idea of taking someone who is plain (or thinks she's plain) and transforming her. Who wouldn't want that? I hope Cory's reunion with Jake and a second chance at love will stir some good memories for you.

The setting for HOMECOMING is a part of Wisconsin where my family went camping every summer. We loved spending time in Door County, Peninsula State Park, and especially loved it when the sour cherries were in season.

  • Peninsula State Park is a 3,776-acre Wisconsin state park with eight miles of Green Bay shoreline in Door County. Peninsula is the third largest state park in Wisconsin, and is visited by an estimated 1 million visitors annually. (source: Wikipedia)

More About the Author

I feel like I have been a writer all my life--as cliché as that sounds, even to me!--from childhood essays that ended up in the Sunday School bulletin, to long-ago burned journals (I hate that I did that!), to love-sick poems written on napkins while having a glass or three of wine, to newsletters and articles and press releases written on-the-job, and finally to happily-ever-after romances that I love love love writing!

As an award-winning author of four print-published novels via traditional publishers, I have now happily embraced the ebook revolution and am delighted to be on the indie path. I'm tellin' ya, the freedom is exhilarating!

So, what makes me different than the skads of other romance writers? I think my romances offer a little "something extra"--whether it's really interesting secondary characters with their own arching subplots, unique and detailed settings, or research that translates into unexpected facts sprinkled in. Whatever it is, my stories do seem to translate into something even first time romance readers enjoy! Nothing makes me happier than to read a review from a reader who was surprised by how much the story touched him or her.

And, please realize that your reviews on Amazon are GOLDEN to indie authors, so I always encourage readers to leave a sentence or two after you've read an ebook!

My debut ebook, HOMECOMING-a Wisconsin Reunion Romance, now has over 200 5-star reviews, averaging 4.6 stars out of 5. It also was a 2013 Quarter-Finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest and garnered a very nice review from Publishers Weekly!).

I am thrilled with readers' responses to my stories and I'm 100% hooked on writing more ebooks! You'll find 2 more romances on my Janet Wellington author page (UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, COWBOY FOR SALE), and a women's fiction novel (BECOMING LULU). And, for fun, I created a pictorial ebook that features all the cats I met during a trip to Italy where I spoke at the Women's Fiction Festival in Matera (CATS OF ITALY/GATTI d'ITALIA). What's to come? I'll be sharing more romances and some paranormals!!

Also, all my ebooks include a donation of my royalties to a designated charity, a different one for each ebook (my way to pay it forward!). For my ebooks I use the company name of Grantitude (grant + gratitude) Press, and you'll see the GP logo on each of my ebook covers. You're helping a great non-profit organization with each ebook you purchase--thank you!!

This was offered as a free download for Kindle, so I didn't have high expectations. However I found this story to be very enjoyable and touching, reading it in one sitting. Cory and Jake were high school friends before life intervened and they went off on different paths. Circumstances surrounding Jake's Aunt Tillie ultimately bring them together again and as they work through Tillie's last request to rehab her home for sale, they come to grips with their past, present and maybe even their future.

This is the second book by this author that I have read. The first one was a free download, and was the kind of book that I like to read. So I downloaded it and began reading it the same day. Halfway through that book I looked for more by that author and found Homecoming. It wasn't free, but I purchased it anyway. I was not disappointed. It seems when I read a book if I can't put myself into the main character's place it isn't enjoyable to me. I could imagine being Cory in this story, so it made all the things that happened to her seem all the more real. I felt the joys and the heartaches.
Wonderful job, Janet Wellington! Hurry and put some more ebooks out.

I loved this book...I could not put it down. I started it on my lunch break and ended up finishing it as soon as I got home! Highly recommend!!
This is a touching store of Cory and Jake, old friends/high school sweethearts who have not seen each other since graduation.
They are reunited by Aunt Tillie's death and the renovation of her Victorian house, which requires them to live there for 3 months in order to split the profits.
During the renovation they are forced to revisit their pasts and try to come to terms with what has happened and see if their hearts are ready for each other.

Not my genre, so I was surprised and delighted by this beautifully written story filled with unanticipated tension and captivating characters. As a reader you empathize with their flaws and worry over their choices and identify with their regrets. You cheer their successes and laugh and shed a tear, and when you finish the story remains with you. A satisfying read that I recommend without reservation.

A beautifully written novel that fulfills the yearning in each of our hearts for that perfect love. This romance has been both written in the stars and in the will of Jake's late Aunt Tillie who, for therapy and for reasons of her own, loved being a matchmaker. She has left both her tumbledown Victorian home and her plethora of cats to her nephew Jake and her caretaker Cory with certain stipulations attached. Ms. Wellington imparts such endearing qualities to her characters that it is impossible not to care for them and their relationship. The intimacy of their love will take your breath away. This tome comes complete with a magical makeover, Cinderella style, for Cory----every woman's dream. And to top that off there is a complete refurbishing of an old Victorian house that would make any do-it-yourselfer feel satisfied. Additionally, there are other situations that occur that leave the reader curious to discover what will happen. So there is a dichotomy here, in that one stage gives you a feeling of fulfillment, while another leaves you hungry for more. Would love to read another in this series. I have read all of Ms. Wellington's previous novels and each is a gem in it's own right. Loved it!

In Homecoming ~ a Wisconsin reunion, the two strong main characters make this novel interesting from start to finish. Jake is compassionate, successful and willing to help others and sexy too. The beautiful, friendly and strength of Cory matches Jake perfectly. Real life situations keep the beautiful love story of these two into a great novel.
