Assembly was very easy as well take it out of the box.

Admittedly I tried to trim out a slag driveway so maybe I didn't have the right tool but This gizmo didn't have the heft to actually dig.
Richard J. Mckinnon
Cuts great, plus blows a lot of the grass from the edge which is nice.

Now I am going to keep my walks and driveway edged. I used to dread trying to edge the walks with a string trimmer, the ground comes over the walks and holding the line trimmer for hours trying to get a groove or some weeds out near the roots was depressing. I am older and decided to spring for this relatively inexpensive edger. I am so happy with this purchase. You do not have to hold it it sits on the ground and can be tipped some for getting a tight V trench. I am keeping the line trimmer for touch up and against fences, but this little workhorse is exactly what I needed.

So in the last 10 years or so I have been slowly getting away from gas powered equipment to electric powered. My main reason for doing this is cutting down on maintenance. I've grown tired of having to mix gas and oil and having to deal with stuff not starting when you need it to.

This is a replacement for an attachment that goes onto my gas string trimmer. Poulan Pro PP125 17-Inch 25cc 2-Cycle Gas-Powered Straight-Shaft String Trimmer with Split Shaft

Even though the trimmer and attachment are only 2 years old when I edge with the Poulan my back starts to ache within 10 minutes of use. I originally had my heart set on a Black & Decker LE750 Edge Hog 2-1/4 HP Electric Landscape Edger and was going to buy one last summer when they were $59.99 on sale. This year they are running OVER $80!

I got this Homelite through woot web deals for $53 shipped and couldn't pass it up.

First off I have to say its built VERY well. I was pleasantly surprised at the weight of the item as I consider weight a good thing since it often relates to heavier gauge components that will last you longer.

Assembly was very easy as well take it out of the box. Remove two rubber plugs that protect the main shaft slide the shaft together and twist to tighten and ta-da your done! Very sweet 2 minute assembly!

The handles are adjustable on this model you can adjust the overall height by sliding the shaft open or closed and you can adjust the secondary grab handle also by sliding it up or down.

Operation wise it works very well.

I purchased this Homelite UT45100 edger because my Black & Decker LE750 had a failure of the reduction gear between the motor and the blade. It turns out that Black & Decker no longer makes this part available, so the edger could not be repaired and had to be thrown away.

The Homelite edger is well made and will not tip over when standing (unlike the Black & Decker). I like the fact that the blade is not fully enclosed, thus has less of a tendency to clog up like the Black & Decker unit does. The cutting performance and noise is about the same as the Black & Decker unit.

Also, the depth of edging or trenching can be continuously adjusted (unlike the Black & Decker unit which has only two positions)

The only minor disadvantage I found is that the Homelite edger MOVES BACKWARD toward the operator when it starts up and the blade is catching on something. After it breaks loose it behaves normally

All in all : a decent electrical edger for the price (though I noticed that Homelite on their web site does not show any edgers any more)

Prior to purchasing this edger it had been months since I edged my driveway and sidewalks, I have a gas powered edger and an edger attachment for my weed eater, but the gas powered edger lacked power, was becoming difficult to start, and having to change the attachment on the weed eater became tedious. I'm getting older and want things to be simpler. After reading various reviews and more importantly the many user comments, I settled on this edger, ordering it with an extra blade. The edger arrived pretty much assembled, taking only minutes to assemble. It stands on its own and feels solid and balanced. It really is idiot proof. My first edging was really tough as the lawn had severely overgrown the driveway, sidewalk, and walkways, so not surprisingly this first cut went extremely slow. It took several passes to finally get through the thick mat of overgrowth that eventually filled a 55 gal. garbage can. I didn't stop from start to finish, except for the occasional need to rake, and throughout the motor stayed cool, and no problem with popped circuit breakers. I'm using a 100' 12 gauge extension cord connected to a 15 amp outlet. We're now getting a lot of rain now so it seems that every 4 days the lawn needs mowing. For the second edging I installed the new blade as the first cut really dulled the original blade. Edging took a fraction of the time compared to the first cut and went quickly and easily, like cutting butter. There is an integrated blower that blows the cuttings to the side which is a nice feature. I didn't notice this during the first cut. The blade was still sharp after this cutting and I have yet had to change it. I've been using this edger at least once a week for the last two months and it's performance has been stellar.
