Book Description

His every wish, his every dream, was that some day he could be like his older brothers. A valiant warrior, a champion among men, that's what Jorem wanted to be. To be respected by others and loved by his father the King. Faced with decisions that could affect an entire kingdom he must choose between the comforts of life in a castle and the grueling work of a blacksmith's servant. He'll do this, if not for his family, at least for the people the royal house should be serving. In the refiners forge he discovers his own metal even when faced with the anger and contempt of a people who have come to distrust those of royal blood. Alone he may be, but through his determination and the wisdom gained from an old man Jorem stands his ground. He finds that becoming a man isn't about a title and prestige, sometimes it's just doing the right thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting charactter - Disappointing story November 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I rather enjoyed Jorem's character development. He begins like many young teens as scrawny and clumsy but with a good moral foundation and develops from there in a sharp contrast to his older brothers.

While there are numerous other characters presented, most are one-dimensional and show no character development. Some characters are really inconsistent; the king will kill anyone that hurts at prince, but will leave the youngest alone, unsupervised, and forgotten? And there must be a major shortage of noble girls, because the duke's son is going to marry the blacksmith's daughter, and no one thinks that is at all unusual?

However, I was very disappointed with the actual story. Very little actually happened and only one event held any real possibility of excitement and it was completed in a couple pages. Waaay too much of the book was taken up by description of a blacksmith's job.

The book could use some basic editing to correct grammar/spelling/homophone choice as well as tighten pages of tedious description to a few paragraphs. This could be the beginning of a really excellent story, but it's not there yet.

It's an easy read and cost just a buck, so I guess I got my money's worth, but I won't be buying the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic October 19, 2013
By Forster
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For only 99 cents, this would have to be one of the best books I have ever read. Well written, it does not involve a lot of action or adventure, but the character growth is amazing. With a lot of works I've read, I find myself skipping over some of the writing to get to more interesting parts. Not with The Spare Heir. I appreciate you sharing it with us, and look forward to the next book you write.

I got to eighty percent on my kindle, stopped reading, bought the second book and then finished both books before going to bed.

Michael thank you for the gift of your mind's eye.

As the book was so cheap, I simply bought it. Little did I know I would use my whole day reading it and then buying the second book to company it. ( I have a feeling my friend isn't thanking me for doing the same for her. ) Alas, the evil almost a cliffhanger, but not entirely a cliffhanger end of the book.

I loved Honor Bound. It was easy to follow Rim's story and keep on hoping things would turn a lot better for him. He had so high morals and ideas, that it would be interesting to see would others ever measure to the same. His childhood isn't a childhood at all. At his age children usually are playing together, but Rim has lessons, sword-work and finally because of his brothers work as a blacksmith's helper. All of that has made him what he is, a young man who follows high morals.

The book seems to be a short one, but it doesn't matter. It was enjoyable and I'm waiting eagerly for the book three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put it Down! April 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just couldn't put this book down. It was so easy to read. Standard Fantasy. I'm sure some will find it too simplistic or one dimensional. But I just enjoyed watching as the story unfolds.

I was dissapointed when it ended with no notice, I kept pushing the down button then finally realized that I had reached the end.

Imagine how pleased I was to find that the second book is out and how disappointed I'll be as I wait for the 3rd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable March 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked this book but it didn't really go anywhere. There wasn't an underlying story problem that was resolved by the end. I did like the character and the way the author wove mysticism into the story. If you want something deep, epic and fantastic, look elsewhere. If you want to read for fun about a boy who has honor and finds strength and magic, read on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exditing March 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book was engrossing and the further who read the less you wanted to stop. It will definitely appeal to fantasy readers who like to read about the coming of age of young knights who are more than they seem. The conclusion leaves you wanting to read the next book in series

I enjoyed this little story, but I'd have enjoyed it more if the flow wasn't broken by the numerous instances of lack of proofreading -- incl. some kind-of-hilarious homonyms. Read more
