HP Graphing Calculator 39GS Calculators

Customer Reviews

Once you read it and mess around it's rather easy to use.
Johnathan Verdin
It is a great start to get students and teachers interested in doing more math and science too which is a very good thing considering recent trends in North America.
Ann E. Revelle
After a little less than a year, the HP39gs started freezing randomly.

This calculator is just what I wanted and needed. I have owned top of the line graphing calculators from HP, Casio, Sharp, TI, etc., but overall I like this one almost the best due primarily to its simplicity and ease of use. I like it especially for trips and outside activities when I can do quite useful mathematical explorations that I don't normally have time for at home or in the office with my busy schedule. It was designed by HP and teachers, first and foremost however, as an aid in teaching HIGH SCHOOL students mathematics in a very user-friendly manner.

PROS:

1) It is simple, fairly light and quite fast (75 MHz clock speed), algebraic equation operating system (EOS), but not with HP RPN, but not bad for the money since the hp 39gs units are now on sale for $63.99 compared with $59.99 for the new HP 35s for example which is a great machine, but which is totally outclassed by this much more versatile unit. The hp 39 gs is now about one year in production having replaced the 39G+ with a much better designed keyboard, etc. as described below and has evolved through 3-4 flavors from the original HP 38 of about a decade ago).

2) Very well organized analysis activities using special Aplets with about a dozen available with the unit and many many more on the world wide web (or you can write your own since programming is also available on the 39 gs). These specialized Aplets include analysis of functions, parametric equations, the famous HP solver system, statistics, etc. (with least squares curve fits available for about a dozen types, such as cubic, exponential, power law, logistic or even a user defined type, etc.!).

Every positive thing mentioned about this calculator in other reviews is correct, and I completely agree with them. It comes with a well-written and detailed manual, and the calculator itself is very user-friendly and has many useful functions that make the TI-84 seem prehistoric in comparison.

However, this calculator is not reliable at all. HP does not support this product anymore. There is no warranty of any kind. The last date it was manufactured was 2006, if that says anything.
After a little less than a year, the HP39gs started freezing randomly. The only way to unfreeze it is to remove the batteries. Now, the calculator will not start at all. I have my AP Calculus exam in a month and everything I have learned to do on the HP39gs must be re-learned on a TI.
I have tried talking to HP tech support about it, and that is a nightmare in itself. You will spend hours trying to figure out how to fix an issue if one arises, and I don't think it's worth it. Also, if you purchase this calculator, expect to be on your own during any math class when the teacher explains how to do everything using a TI.

I'd rather pay 100 dollars more and get the TI-89 Titanium than have to go through what I went through with this calculator.

I really like my HP 39gs. It's a good calculator, that I bought for a reasonable price, and it has a really good keyboard and screen. HP continues to make fine calculators and I must say that it does its job rather well.

The learning curve from my old TI-83 SE was a bit steep at first, but as I used the thing, I got used to it and now it's hard for me to use any other model of graphing calculator. The OS is good and intuitive, and working one's way around the keyboard is straightforward enough that I don't need any help with it, not even the manual it came with.

That said, the connection software only works with Windows, an issue since my main computer is a Power Mac G4, and since my portable is a PowerBook these days. Not that there's that much software out there for HP calculators, as compared to TI models -- there's even more stuff for my not-permitted-in-most-classrooms TI-89 than there is for my cherished HP 39gs out there on the Internet -- but I'd still like to be able to save data from the calculator to my Mac without any trouble.

So if you own a PC or don't need to transfer data from your calculator to your computer, this is an excellent buy.

Nothing wrong with this calculator.Good manual, good and easy interface. A bit heavy but all the graphing calculators have some weight. A lot of useful apps are included. There are some cons of this product which I do not want to share because they are just matter of personal preference. Overall it is a good purchase for anyone.

This calculator is worth every penny. It is easy to use, and contains all the functions/abilities that my son needs in his math classes. It can be used with a computer to increase the functionality. It was a great deal!

I purchased this for the symbolic capability. The manual is clean and the exercises work. It is easy to understand and a short time is required to learn each capability. The Manual impressed me. Many manuals are poorly written, not written for any audience, contain critical errors, in short, not really intended to be read.

I have another calculator from HP that is a graphing calculator it had no printed manual. It has a steep learning curve as a result of the PDF manual where many examples simply do not work. This machine actually gave me the required information to do some work with the older calculator.

The symbolic function has many limitations. The one I do not like is the limitation of ONE character per variable. This limits the work you can do where two character variables are used to help you know what they are.

Otherwise it is a great machine.
