4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the casual user, August 5, 2003
By
Willis B. Boyce (Mesa, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HP OfficeJet 4110 Multifunction (Office Product)
I bought this unit primarily to use as a fax machine. Most of the faxes that I receive include customers' credit card details. This makes a thermal-transfer fax machine like the inexpensive Brother, Panasonic, and Sharp units unsuitable because they leave the customers' credit card details in negative form on the film. Inkjet faxes are the next-least-expensive option.

This HP Officejet 4110 surprised me with its combination of features and low price. It's only slightly more expensive than a dedicated black and white inkjet fax machine, and you get color printing, color faxing, color scanning, color copying, and the 33.6 kbps fax speed. If you absolutely have to have a telephone handset on your fax machine, then maybe one of the dedicated black and white units is for you, but otherwise, there's not much reason to buy cheaper.

So far I have been impressed with this unit. The installation was painless. It comes with a poster-sized installation flowchart, and everything worked as it should. You install the software first, then hook up the Officejet 4110 and power it on second. You install the ink cartridges through an access door on the right side of the unit. The software installer pauses while waiting for you to power up the unit and align the print head, then carries on once it detects that you've done so.

The Officejet 4110 knocks off printing chores quickly, and print quality on plain paper is quite high. In fact, the unit generates higher-quality output at a faster pace than my Canon S800 printer, which is a bit embarassing for the Canon because it cost twice as much. (I imagine than the 6-color Canon would outperform the 4-color HP when printing color photos, though.)

The included software is reasonably complete. You can access all of the Officejet 4110's functions from the "Director" program. Most of the features of the unit are also accessible from the front panel, but the Director provides a better user interface as well as better integration with your PC. A very convenient feature provided by the Director is the ability to generate a cover sheet for a set of pages that are loaded in the unit's automatic document feeder (ADF). The Director software will scan in all of the pages, add the cover sheet, and then fax them out. While faxing, the Director displays a thumbnail page that fills in as each page is being sent, an unnecessary but interesting and thoughtful feature. The Director can also store incoming faxes and forward them to another number.

While I bought the Officejet 4110 as a fax machine, I've found myself enjoying its other features, which are all well-executed and nicely integrated. For the price, I would have been satisfied with a lot less, so I have to say that Hewlett Packard has really hit this one over the fence.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad for a basic multifunction, February 22, 2004
By
This review is from: HP OfficeJet 4110 Multifunction (Office Product)
Let's face it, this is a multifunction printer that costs under $150.

When you purchase one piece of equipment to do many things, you'll always be unhappy with at least one feature. For me, I needed a printer for my occasional printing at home (a few pages a week) that doubled as a fax. The copy feature and the scanner were pluses.

PROS:
- the HP software that allows one to send faxes straight from Word and create quick and easy cover sheets is pretty nice.
- the buttons on the machine are easy to use and not difficult at all to figure out. Want to copy? Press copy. Want to copy in color? Press copy, then color.

Photos print out alright, but I wouldn't recommend this as a photo printer. If you want high quality photos from your digital camera, use one of the online services or the machine at the store.

If you are truely considering some high level printing for a home office, don't buy this. If you do some printing, copying and faxing from home but use your office or some other location for the majority of your work, this is an excellent choice.

The install was no problem at all on my XP Home and Pro computers. Windows 2000 and Mac OS X worked fine as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this machine!!!, April 13, 2005
This review is from: HP OfficeJet 4110 Multifunction (Office Product)
We've had this multifunction fax in our office for about 6 months now, and I consider it a huge disappointment. At even the most basic level, it just doesn't do the job. Although it claims to handle 20 pages, it can't feed more than about 10 sheets without jamming. Even faxing only one page, I have misfeeds at least once a week. I expect to be able to put my fax in the machine, dial it, and walk away, but with this machine I have to babysit every page.

The fax includes software (HP Image Zone) that allows you to send faxes from your computer. Sounds great, but there are some drawbacks. First, the program is huge, over 400 MB, and most of it is extraneous junk. Second, if you send a fax from your computer and the line is busy, IT DOES NOT REDIAL!! Unbelievable, but it actually gives you a message that the line was busy and puts it in the log. If you want to redial, you have to open the log and resend it yourself.

Finally, the HP fax that we were using before was about five years old, and it had the capability of receiving faxes into the computer. This is a great function, and something that we really depended on. Why waste all of that paper on junk faxes, extraneous pages, or documents that could just be stored on the computer? Also, it made it possible to look up old faxes if the paper copy was lost. I assumed that a newer HP multifunction that advertised the ability to communicate with your PC would have the same ability to receive faxes, but I was wrong. Believe it or not, HP has abandoned this capability in all of their faxes! If you want to receive a fax into you PC, you have to buy a special modem separate from the one in the machine itself.

Please, do yourself a favor and buy a better machine. This one just isn't worth the money.
