Great for basic computing,
By Fasteddie78ia (Iowa USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HP 550 - Core 2 Duo T5670 / 1.8 GHz - RAM 2 GB HDD 160 GB - DVD RW (+R DL) / DVD-RAM - GMA X3100 Dynamic Video Memory Technology Laptop (Electronics)
I was looking for a new Windows XP computer, which is not easy to find these days. My HP550 arrived this week and I am very happy with it. The case is simple and plain, no wild colors or silly designs. The display is huge and bright, very easy to see what's going on. The DVD player works without a hitch, the keyboard feels good, the system boots quickly. The processor, while not the fastest one out there, works great for websurfing, email, working with Photoshop and other tasks I use. The hard drive is only 160GB, but that's more than enough for me. The only downsides are that there is no built-in webcam or Firewire. I can live with that. Google the HP 550 and you'll find some very competitive prices as well as a $50 rebate (as of 5/22/09). For what I paid, I'm very happy with this purchase!

HP Has Lied and Restricts Support,
By Charles Wilkes "Heritage Conservator" (South East Asia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: HP 550 - Core 2 Duo T5670 / 1.8 GHz - RAM 2 GB HDD 160 GB - DVD RW (+R DL) / DVD-RAM - GMA X3100 Dynamic Video Memory Technology Laptop (Electronics)
I purchased my HP 550 laptop in S. Korea. The sound is mono and comes from the right speaker only. Much to my surprise, the HP technician told his office that he visited my house and that my computer worked 'perfectly'. He never showed for his appointment and another day was wasted waiting for him. I have reloaded Vista and downloaded the lastest drivers eight times, but the problem persists.
They promised that they would send another technician who never came. When I contacted US support and begged them to help me, they bluntly refused. Then, I went to their support website. The support website scanned my computer and said that my product does not include any support!! This is a real surprise to me since I have the warranty card and U.S. call center numbers in my original HP box. It is also surprising since my laptop has been authenticated as a genuine HP product by their call center here. TRULY DISAPPOINTING!
