5.0 out of 5 stars An oversized cartridge for people with over-sized needs
With 18mL it should print out about 750 pages. I have no idea if the numbers I had quoted to me, though, are right. The problem is the little bar that appears whenever you print something hasn't even gone down 25% and I've had this cartridge for almost two months. Its definitely a real wallet saver for me since I'm a student in college and the nearest store selling...

3.0 out of 5 stars no "retail packaging"
I purposely paid a couple dollars extra to get a "retail packaged" cartridge in a box as shown in the photo for this item. I received a cartridge in plastic pouch with no box. It was mailed in a bubble wrap envelope. The cartridge works OK, and my printer recognized it as a genuine HP cartridge.

With 18mL it should print out about 750 pages. I have no idea if the numbers I had quoted to me, though, are right. The problem is the little bar that appears whenever you print something hasn't even gone down 25% and I've had this cartridge for almost two months. Its definitely a real wallet saver for me since I'm a student in college and the nearest store selling cartridges is as far away as the nearest cartridge world, which I personally love but haven't gotten to see a lot of recently. Both would've required bus commutes, but the 74XL (which is noticeably sticks out farther than the regular 74 and weighs a whole lot more) has not failed me yet. For now I would encourage anyone lucky enough to have a printer that works with an 18mL cartridge like this to get one. And anyone in the market for a new printer should seriously consider checking to make sure there's isn't only compatible with a dinky 5mL one that will get you around 200 pages before going poof.

5.0 out of 5 stars quantity and price - a win!, November 25, 2008

As I mentioned for the HP 75XL inkjet cartridge is the same for this one (black ink only) - get the larger size AND HP brand inks for better quality and to allow for quantity printing. The smaller cartridges just don't cut it in terms of the number of pages it can print before running out. And save by buying it through Amazon, unless you can find a local retailer with better savings - I sure couldn't and am glad I checked with Amazon right away.

It's worth purchasing the XL version of the HP 74 print cartridge, rather than the standard size. It's three times the size of the standard one, and doesn't cost three times as much.

Also, you can often find package deals including the color (75) XL cartridge and the black XL cartridge for around $60. Buying individual regular size cartridges just isn't a wise idea, considering they often cost around $30. (why buy two regulars for $60 when you can buy two XL's for the same price?)

Just make sure to buy a NEW cartridge, not a remanufactured one. Choose a seller with a high rating and low prices. I purchased a package deal recently through ANTOnline, and was amazed with how fast it came (using only regular shipping).

Original HP 74XL Black Ink Cartridge in Retail Packaging is what was advertised and what I thought I was therefore purchasing. However, when the product arrived, I was surprised to have received two cartridges that "replace" the HP 74XL wrapped in clear plastic from "Cartridge World". This is the last of my purchase from this vendor.

Ordered this and the 75xl tricolor and ran out of ink after just a few prints. Contacted seller, got a 2nd set and the same thing happened. Not worth trying to save money if you have to deal with aggravation and time wasted.

I wasn't sure the 74XL cartridge would fit my HP C4400 printer, but it works great. I purchased this on Amazon from GoFastParts for $22.39 with quick and free shipping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not terrible., March 26, 2009

I bought this product as a replacement for my old ink cartridge in my HP C4480. At first, it seemed to be incompatible, but after looking some stuff up online, I found that turning the printer off and on again helped it at least acknowledge the cartridge's presence. The printer still doesn't register how much ink is in the cartridge, but since it's a refurbished XL, I don't have to worry about running out of ink any time soon. All in all, a little finicky at first, but hopefully worth it in the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cartridge fine, but only lasted 450 pages., February 18, 2010

The description of cartridge says it can print around 750 pages. This is admittedly an estimate and there is a footnote saying actual results will vary depending on what you are printing.

I was printing up sheets to hand out at a convention. There was a small logo at the top of each (less than 1-inch by 1.5 inches), 1 page in 5 had a small picture around the same size and otherwise it was all standard text. I was printing in grayscale (no color). This cartridge lasted only around 450 pages. That's 40% less than the estimate given.

Granted, I don't have many options on my printer. It's this cartridge or the smaller one. However, if I had known I'd only get 450 pages out of this cartridge, I wouldn't have printed those documents with it, I would have gone to Kinkos (or FedEx or whatever their name is now).

Math:
- $32 cartridge prints 750 pages: approx 4cents a page
- $32 cartridge prints 450 pages: approx 7cents a page

If you only get 450 pages, then once you add the cost of paper and the extra time it takes to print on a home printer, Kinkos' 10cents a page begins to look much more attractive for big jobs. (And that doesn't even take into account if you had to pay for shipping.)
