IPad Printing!,

This review is from: HP Envy 100 e-All-in-One D410a Printer (CN517A#B1H) (Office Product)
I bought 2 printers in the last 2 months both HP and both worked OK with the iPad , however it was a chore to print, many times it would print and others not.
Saw this on Amazon and love the Apple looking HP printer. It was very easy to set up using just the iPad, not any other computer , took less then five minutes, love it, it has a straight plug and not one of those bricks, the look is very art like and it pretty quiet. Love that the paper tray is hidden and under the front panel. The touch screen was very fluid like and was easy to scroll, I have a hidden network and set up was very easy found my network in a minute. The print quality is very good and it faster then my last 2 HPs both current models. The bests thing it works flawless with my iPad, I can even print EBay shipping labels which I could not before. I now feel complete without a MacBook. Update. I have been getting about 267 prints from a ink carterage which is good, printer can handle all tasks with ease. Very happy I bought this printer, it looks stunning. Ink can be found for about 14.00 each refill which is not bad at all.

This is a gorgeous device in search of greatness. It is extremely well built, set up was easy, and it works as expected and as advertised. Print quality and speed in B&W and color is very good although I don't use this to print large format photographs. The scanner is quite good. The management software is simple and straightforward and the USB (hard wired) and network (wireless) can be individually adjusted. In short, everything works as anticipated.
I think with any multifunction device there are going to be trade-offs that balance price point, performance, and features. I don't think you will be happy with this printer if you want a quality photo printer but it has only one color ink source so that tells you something. You won't be happy replacing ink cartridges if you print reams of paper. I wanted a printer that didn't look like a NASA rover, had good print quality and speed, a good scanner, and wireless capability for a home office. This printer hits the sweet spot for my use and I would purchase it again in a heatbeat. Why very good and not great? It has it's weak spots. The print delivery method: open door - tongue out - paper print - tongue back, door close. It needs a little work. The draft setting for color prints tends to produce only a partial page; I guess HP wants you to burn through the color cartridge or maybe it's intended as a coloration draft only? Software bloat is an issue but that's easily solved. I'm sure there will be other minor inconveniences but the qauality of the printer and scanner aren't diminished. You can definitely buy a better multifunction device but at this price point I haven't seen anything that competes with this one. And it is a really nice looking piece of equipment. Good luck in your search and hope you find a printer that works as well as this one has for me.

I loved this printer for 1 week. I printed wirelessly to my Macs and ipad and ipod. Then the printer's internet connection asked if I would like to update. Stupid me, I said yes. It went into the HP death spiral and not only would not finish the update, but would never work again. After much time on the phone with HP, they offered me a rebuilt unit as a replacement; I said no, the printer is a week old and you can send a brand new one. And are you going to take down the update which destroyed my printer and many others (google HP Envy D410 problems and you will see)
I WOULD GIVE IT 1/2 star if that were possible Never install the HP updates!!!! I would add after dealing with HP, I just gave up----hopeless. I love Amazon---full refund with no hassles. I also bought amazon stock today and sold my hp-----eventually those attitudes show much about the company. Can you believe they are still sending this HP "deathstar" update?

Nice Printer but not all the bugs are worked out yet,

I purchased this model a couple months back and I find the scanning and printing functions to work well; however there is one bug which I have noticed. On this model, the control panel opens and closes upon power up and whenever you perform a printing function. The lid is suppose to close to the position that it was left at before it opened. This default position or angle of the control panel is manually adjustable to allow the user to manage the viewing angle of the LCS display. However, on my printer I find the lid does not always close or return to its "default" position. I have to actually manually close the lid.
The problem is intermittent. I did download the last software version to the printer but it made no difference. Now, this is not a big deal because it is easy to manually close the lid but when I called HP support, I must say I was disappointed. The support desk engineers had no familiarity of the printer nor access to one and they did not seem to be interested in flagging this issue to the design team. I explained to them that the problem only occurs after printer and is intermittent, but never occurs when you first power up the printer. In other words, there is no mechanical or hardware problem with the printer. The problem seems to be that the printer software "forgets" on occassion what the "return" position is for the lid. I spent a few hours of my time trying to troubleshoot and share my findings with HP support, but like I said, their support team in India seems to be clueless or not well educated on customer service and problem management. Now I will admit that HP did offer me the option to replace my printer, but I told them I ws sure the problem is in the software and I would end up driving 80 miles back/forth to the store and just end up with another unit with the same issue. Will see who is right once this printer gets out there more.

I've been looking for a wireless printer to replace my old HP Deskjet in my home office. Some of the recent models look cheap and bulky and are criticized for being noisy. The HP Envy 100 meets the need. The setup went so smoothly and the scan and copy features were easy to learn. It's compact and attractive on the desk. The only drawback is the lack of separate feeder for envelopes. You need to remove the paper from the paper tray in order to insert envelopes. This is not a frequent occurrence for me so it is easy to overlook.

This printer is sleek and relatively easy to set up. For a little over a week, it worked great. Printed remotely from my Ipad and from all computers in my house. I also had documents printed at home on the Envy by emailing the document to the printer via email on my blackberry or from a computer or my Ipad outside the home.
Less than two weeks after receiving the printer, however, there was a message on the screen stating that there is an update available and asking if I wanted to download it. I hit the yes button, and the printer appeared to begin the download process, with the printer screen warning me not to shut off the unit until the download has been completed. That message remained on for two and a half days, during which time the printer ceased to function. I called HP customer support. They had me power the unit down, then turn it on again. That did not work. They then had me take the plug out, and press the power button while putting the plug back in. That did not work either. The same message kept coming on the screen each time it got turned on, and the printer would not work. My problem was elevated to an HP printer case manager, and I was informed that he has heard of this happening. He offered to send a replacement, but could not guarantee I would receive a brand new, rather than refurbished, unit. Since my printer was so new, I felt I deserved a brand new unit if I was to exchange it rather than get a full refund from Amazon, but HP would not budge on this. Fortunately, my 30 days from purchase was not expired, so I contacted Amazon. They were great. While I could have gotten a full refund, I chose instead to get a brand new replacement machine. This was because, as I noted earlier, when the printer worked it was a thing of beauty. Hopefully, the new machine will not malfunction. I plan to update this review after I see if the replacement works satisfactorily. UPDATE: The replacement printer, like the first one, worked fine for a little while, but then it also stopped working. This time, I got the message "printing" that wouldn't come off the screen, but the machine never did print anything after that. I tried sending other documents to the printer to print. Nothing. I then tried shutting the machine off and turning it back on again. Didn't work. Am returning it to Amazon for a full refund.

HP Envy,

After a thorough search for a printer that had the features defined below, we settled on the HP Envy. So far, I'm quite pleased with this printer, although I was disappointed to learn that I can't print wirelessly from a computer that happens to be connected to a company network through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Disconnecting from VPN allows wireless printing, but while on VPN, a USB connection must be maintained in order to communicate with the printer.
Other that that disappointment, we're very pleased with the printer so far. Although we haven't yet used it for any photo prints, the quality of the documents produced is more than acceptable, the scanning feature works extremely well and we really like the ability to preview our copies prior to printing. Printer criteria and how well this printer met each follows: Wireless: Met criteria with the exception of the VPN issue mentoined above which I suspect is true of all wireless printers. Scanning options (to computer or USB stick): The scanning feature works quite well and, if I don't happen to have the printer connected to a computer, I can scan documents directly to a memory card or USB memory stick. I really like having this versatility and, having tested both options, found it to work very well. Small footprint: We sometimes take our printer when traveling in our motorhome, so had a maximum size based on capacity constraints. This unit has one of the smaller footprints, is low profile and has a nice look so we can leave it visible while still maintaining a neat, appealing look in our living space. Reasonable print quality: Although we haven't printed any photos since we acquired this machine, one of our in-store tests involved using a the same photo to create copies on each machine we were considering in stores. That approach made it quite easy to compare photo quality from one printer to another. This unit generated very high quality photos that seemed to more closely compare to the original than most of the other printers we tested. In all, we're so far quite pleased with our purchase - only reason for the 4 star rating is the inability to use while connected to VPN (and HPs failure to note that in their literature) and the inability to scan multiple page documents to a single file while using a memory stick ( this can be accomplished using the scan to computer option).

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The setup went well, including the wireless setup. Only one instruction in the setup procedure was not quite correct, but just a little searching around for the printer name and IP address solved that. Installing the drive software on my comuter was a bit slow, but worked properly the first time. It put several icons on my desktop that I collected into a single folder. Some of the free software HP supplies is useful. The printer is a middle of the road color printer. It has adequate speed (not fast), reasonable color capabilty (but just OK for pictures) that is good enough for home office use, the scanner was a bit difficult to get going the first time, but after that it worked well. The scan quality was comparable to a stand-alone Epson scanner. The printer tray is not really capable of holding many pages, so this is definitely a light duty machine. I'm giving the HP Envy 100 a good rating because it does what it is designed to do, namely be a good all around compact printer-scanner for a home office environment at a reasonable price.

This printer was on my Amazon wish list and I received it as a gift for Xmas today. I asked for this printer as it was one of the few printers on the approved AirPrint list for the iPhone4 and iPad.
It is a low cost printer so I had pretty low expectations but I have to say that I was able to set it up on my wireless network and my iPhone 4, iPad, Windows Laptop and MacBook Air all within 30 minutes including printing for all devices as well scanning for the 2 computers. Rarely do things go this well when setting up computer equipment, refreshing and surprising. Device is attractive, high tech and handsomely designed. A real winner for low volume printing environments. ** Update 2-19-2011 ** The printer went into an automatic update mode about 2 weeks ago and displayed a message on the screen saying "Do not power down during update". That was 2 weeks ago and it is still stuck there. After powering it down and talking to HP they send me a replacement unit and told me that this was a known issue with a limited number of these printers. I haven't setup the replacement yet but I am hoping that all is well with it. HP Customer Service was great at helping me with this problem.

This printer was very easy to set up and has good print quality but 30 days after I purchased the printer it got stuck in some type of update loop. HP support is worthless, it took three seperate calls to get the problem resolved. Now I am going to get a reburbished printer. Do not buy this $200 paper weight.
