4.0 out of 5 stars Very solid, but jams more than any laser I've seen

I have two. They both began jamming repeatedly after about a year or so. All the HP advice regarding a fix doesn't work. So-- they look good, they are fast enough, and they jam.

This is a very solid basic laser printer. It understands all document formats that I've ever sent it and has provided sharp quality output now for 5,500 pages (or so my printer test page tells me).

My primary complaint is paper jams. The 1100 has a tendancy to occasionally grab several sheets at once. This tendancy is most aggregious when paper is running low - if there are 5-10 sheets left in the paper tray/slot, it will often try to feed them all. The instruction manual says to always remove all paper when reloading with more - this definitely helps, but doesn't address when the printer is running low... which is often because the paper tray/slot only holds about 100 pages. So I end up having to constantly glance over before I print to see if it is running low on paper - if so, take all the remaining sheets out, stack nicely with new sheets, and stick back in. A little bit of a pain.

Note: if you do get a jam, you can often clear it by opening the cover and just grabbing and pulling the sheets out. Occasionally this won't work (I had the mother of all jams two weeks ago, when the 1100 feed 15 sheets at once). In these situations, open the front cover, take out the toner cartridge, and locate the binder/roller pressure bar - it is secured by two large silver head screws on the left and right inside the front cover. Slightly loosen both screws to give yourself more slack, pull out offending sheets, tighten screws. Even with these problems I still like the printer because the output looks sharp and clean. Think about getting the "Ase" or "Axi" model for additional functionality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean Copies, Dependable Printer, June 29, 2000

Been using this printer in a small office for over a year. After 1 month, it performed so well we purchased another. Both have been maintenance free and consistently produced clean copies. We print anywhere from 50 to 800 pages in a given day and have had no problems. A good laser printer for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Laser Printer, June 17, 2000

This review is from: HP LaserJet 1100se Printer (Office Product)
At it's price range, and considering how cheaply the toner cartridges can come by, it's the best value for the money. Easy set up, excellent print quality, and I like the manual tray and the auto-shut off feature. The only concern I have is that the top feeding trays will collect dust, but I've remedied that with the suggestion to cover the top when not in use. After 2 great HP Deskjet Ink-jet printers, it looks like this Laser is going to carry on the HP tradition of quality in my house.

1.0 out of 5 stars Paper Feed Problems - Absolutely Terrible, May 2, 2005
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1100se Printer (Office Product)
As with many other reviewers, I have incurable paper feed problems and HP support is, as has become the norm these days, non-existent. For a while, I wasted my money on HP LaserJet paper, but found the cheap stuff misfeeds just as well as the good stuff. I even procured a copy of the service manual, replaced the feed roller and separator pads, etc. Good print quality for the price, but having to feed one page into the input tray at a time makes this unit worthless.

5.0 out of 5 stars HP1100se Laser is Very Good., June 30, 2000
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1100se Printer (Office Product)
I had an Epson InkJet but for a long time wanted a Laser. HP makes great stuff so I tried the 1100se and I think you would like it to. Its very quiet and prints fast. I print alot and sofar I havent found anything bad to say. It not any bigger then other printers and it smokes them in speed. Im not sure how many pages you get per cartridge but they say more then Ink printers.I say its a keeper. Oh yea the print quality is very good. I keep mine set to low so it dosent use alot of toner.

1.0 out of 5 stars Paper Misfeeds (used to be a nice printer), July 31, 2005
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1100se Printer (Office Product)
Like everyone else, my printer pulls at least two if not ten sheets each time. Tried cheap and expensive paper. No difference. It used to work really well and recommended it in the office. The one at work started misfeeding first. They bought the "fix kit" which did absolutely nothing. I still use it and single-feed the sheets but it's driving me nuts. I couldn't recommend this to anyone and won't buy an HP printer again.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Like HP, but Not This HP, September 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1100se Printer (Office Product)
I've had several HP printers in my life and swear by them... until now. I've been very disappointed in this printer. About 6 months after buying the 1100, it began to pull in multiple pieces of paper each time I would print. First two, then three, now about 10 so that it jams every time I try and print. My only option is to feed the paper in one sheet at a time, not fun when you print as much as I do. My advice, stay away from this one until HP get's their act together.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great, March 8, 2001
By

I've had one for about 6 months, and have had no maintenance problems whatsoever printing on paper, envelopes, and labels. However, it mysteriously prints an extra blank page from time to time, doesn't hit the label borders on the nose, and, I've found, has inferior gray-scale characteristics. Further, the straight paper path option (for envelopes and card stock) has no tray, and dumps the media on the floor or the table in front of the printer.

This unit replaced an NEC 860 laser printer with similar specs that had some mechanical problems from the beginning and finally gave out after 2 years. In spite of the occasional jams, the NEC printed labels far more accurately, had a faster warm-up time, managed half-tones far better, and had an on/off switch which the HP lacks (handy when you need to reboot the unit--a pain to pull out the plug.)

I recently ordered an NEC 1400 series which, at about $75.00 less for 12ppm, is probably a better value, and the new design has hopefully solved the mechanical problems. The HP goes to my new home office where the applications are much less demanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Workhorse, March 12, 2007
This review is from: HP LaserJet 1100se Printer (Office Product)
I used the HP LaserJet 1100 at work for a long time in a very busy office. I was so pleased with it that I got a second-hand one for myself to use at home a few years later. It did start to have some issues with picking up extra paper as do almost all laser printers of that time but after taking it to my local computer repair guy for some maintenance it was fine.
