Hewlett-Packard has included eight one-touch buttons on the 5490Cse, including scan-to-email, copy, share-to-Web, photo reprint, and more. The transparency adapter is quite helpful for scanning 35mm negatives and slides, while the software bundle includes OCR and other useful photo-imaging programs. The 5490Cse connects via either USB or parallel port, has a maximum scanning size of 8.5 by 14 inches (with document feeder), and also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

Negative scan with loss of detail and color mismatch,

The features sound great. But reality is different. Negative scans look horrible, with loss of detail and color mismatch. Photo scans also show color mismatch. The document auto feeder will usually fail and produce a paper jam. What else can be said? Go for the Epson Perfection 2450.

I just received this scanner yesterday and within an hour I was scanning items with it. The sheet feeder works pretty well so far and I haven't tried out the slide attachment. I installed it on a Windows XP box and didn't even have to reboot during or after installation. A very good product. Whatever problems the previous reviewer had, HP has fixed them now.

Overpriced garbage,
This review is from: HP ScanJet 5490cse Scanner (Office Product)
HP is resting on its laurels. Having owned a LaserJet 5si for 10 years now with near trouble-free performance, as well as much loved LaserJet IIP, 6P, DeskJet 895Cse. This scanner is a HUGE disappointment. I bought it to replace the wonderful LaserJet Companion I used to scan bills etc, so I needed a sheet feeder. After returning a Visioneer because it couldn't enlarge while it scanned, this HP unit was about the only choice. It's Slower than molasses, the ADF is nearly useless. You have to set the paper size every time you (try) to scan. Additionally, I would have to unplug and reinsert the USB cable EVERY time I wanted to use it. Irrespective of computer it was connected to, I tried it on several. The HP scanning software is very inflexible, way to automatic and not friendly at all. My experience with HP scanning software is it gets worse as it gets newer, it also gets bigger and fatter. Why these companies can't focus on making products work instead of filling them with more unreliable features is a conundrum.
