5.0 out of 5 stars Fast printer, great envelope feeder.
Just like the first reviewer said, this thing is VERY fast. After about 8 seconds pages pop out about one per second. The printer is solid and I expect years of service. It comes with a 64A cartridge with a 10,000 page capacity.

Honestly it's a dream printer. Fast, clean looking, loud, but not too distracting, and the fact that it doesn't jam and print all black pages like my last HP is a welcome change. But setting it up with the help of HP, a nightmare.

This review is from: HP Laserjet P4014N Printer (Office Product)
Just like the first reviewer said, this thing is VERY fast. After about 8 seconds pages pop out about one per second. The printer is solid and I expect years of service. It comes with a 64A cartridge with a 10,000 page capacity.

I run a small business and send envelopes to physicians and patients. I wanted to print to envelopes. I wore out a Canon Canoscan feeder tray over several years. I picked this printer because it was the cheapest that accepted the HP CB524A HP - Envelope feeder envelope feeder. Yes, I was willing to pay about $1000 for the printer and envelope feeder just for the envelopes. We do a lot of envelopes. Even though that was all I was planning to print, I was just amazed at the speed of this unit for regular printing, and it has become my preferred printer in the office. The envelope feeder snaps onto the front of the unit and envelopes feed flawlessly. As a bonus, the envelope feeder does not prevent the use of the manual tray. This is important for a multi user printer. I had thought that the envelope feeder would block the manual feed. Instead, the manual feed tray is accessible. I can print regularly from the large capacity 600 sheet bottom tray, print envelopes, and when I do payroll send the job to the printer, walk over to the printer, slip the checks in and they print out when the paper is sensed in the upper tray.

Image quality is great. The screen for images is fine (fine as in distinction to coarse) for good image resolution.

Setup is easy. As a USB printer it works fine. As a network printer it looks for a DHCP sever on the network or it sets up on the 198.x.x.x subnet. I have a Macintosh based network. The printer also can be found with Bonjour. TCP/IP and Appletalk are supported as well as all the Microsoft defined networks. Besides using the front panel menu you can log into the printer with a web browser when the printer is on a network. Besides looking at supplies you can configure all the settings with the web browser. Just find the printer's IP address by going through the front panel menu, then type in the printer's IP address in your browser (like http://10.0.1.101). In my case, since I have a DHCP server the printer set up automatically. I then found the IP address, used a web browser to connect to the printer, went to the network control and set up the printer for manual IP assignment. Depending which subnet I am on in network I connect via Appletalk or IP. This is a very flexible setup.

The printer is very solidly built. It is commercial quality. It is also built be be serviced. The cartridge includes the image transfer drum, which is the the part the wears out first on a laser printer. Getting a new one with each toner cartrige change means long term great images. The toner cartridge, 64A, has a 10,000 page capacity. There is a higher capacity cartridge with a 24,000 page capacity. (At less than 2 cents per copy I'd rather get the new drum with each cartridge and feel comfortable with a lower cycle count on the transfer drum.) HP also sells a maintenance kit, which allows you to change the fuser and rollers in the printer. The fuser is the heated roller that melts toner onto the paper. That is the second piece that wears out on a laser printer. I read, somewhere, that has either a 100,000 copy or 250,000 copy life. The repair kit also has additional replacement parts for the rollers in the paper path. Having maintenance kits means this is a serious printer for commercial work which is to be serviced rather than discarded. Compared to the price I am paying to commercial support for the Canon this is a bargain. (The Canon is also my scanner and FAX receiver, so it still has a place in my office.)

Given the speed, capacity, durability, and available accessories, this printer is priced at a very attractive price. The C64A cartridge is worth about $180 and is included. Given how much more productive I and my staff are with this printer it was a very good purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great printer but BE AWARE ..., June 1, 2009
This review is from: HP Laserjet P4014N Printer (Office Product)
WARNING!! This printer can not use the 24,000 page high capacity CC364X toner cartridge. That cartridge simply will not fit. The only usable cartridge is the 10,000 page CC364A. Our computer club learned that lesson the hard way. If you plan to print in high volume you should consider the HP4015 as you will easily save the price difference in toner. Other than this problem, this appears to be a great printer and I have been happy with it in every other respect.

Honestly it's a dream printer. Fast, clean looking, loud, but not too distracting, and the fact that it doesn't jam and print all black pages like my last HP is a welcome change. But setting it up with the help of HP, a nightmare.

The printer comes with a very straight forward installation disk. I uploaded the necessary software, making sure to follow directions exactly. Each time an error about an incorrect file path would pop up. After attempting to go around this error I finally gave in and called HP. After nearly 4 hours they still had NO IDEA why I was getting an error, or how to get around it. Multiple downloads, multiple uninstalls, conferences, questions, nothing was working.

In the end, without the help of HP we moved the printer to another computer and TA-DA it worked. Connected the remaining company computers via the network and things are now working perfectly. But why in those 4 hours couldn't HP figure out my issue? Why did no one know what this fatal error was?

Had I not been using this printer at a company with a working network I would have eventually had to return the printer because of faulty installation on the main machine.

Good printer, but don't count on HP to help you out if you find yourself in a jam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solidly Built, Easy Network Install (info for Win7 Network here), November 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Laserjet P4014N Printer (Office Product)
The DVD that came with the product would not load the drivers. Same error several times with varied settings.

However, they were still very easy to install on a Win7 network.

1. Plug it into the network using a regular LAN cable.
2. Find the printer on each computer by going to the network window, right click on the printer, and click install. No need to use the DVD.
3. The autoinstall should take under 15 seconds with no huge garbage driver files or lots of prompts.
4. No need to reset, it should be immediately ready to go.

After 3 days of heavy use I am impressed by its speed and quality. It is clearly well made and packaged.

The LCD screen and menu is small but hi-res and well-organized.

Made in Japan! Having purchased 3 laser all-in-ones in the past 3 years, you really get what you pay for. There are no real printer deals, and buying used is a huge risk.

One thing about HP Laserjet quality: My old office had multiple 10-year-old HPs that survived daily use and used mainly off-brand ink replacements.

5.0 out of 5 stars LaserJet 4014, October 2, 2010

I bought this printer to replace a LaserJet 4250 that was about 6 years old and had printed 120,000 pages.
I have only had this for 1 day so far, but so far everything is going well and it is what I expected.
A few people commented about the noise level. This is much quieter than my LaserJet 4250 was. Bear in mind that this printer is a laser printer that puts out 45 pages per minute. It will not be as quiet as an inkjet printer that is printing a few pages per minute.
If you are looking for a monochrome laser printer that will print 45 pages per minute, I think this is a good one.
I bought mine through Amazon with Buy.com being the vendor. The price was $424 including free shipping. If you buy this from HP or from Office Depot or a place like that, the price is $799 plus about $65 of shipping. So I got it for about half of the price from a major retailer. But it is the same printer regardless of who you buy it from. So shop for price savings.

This is a great printer. Works well with my wireless network. Ultra fast. By the time I walk across the room, the job is done. Super easy to use. Best monochrome I have ever used.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fuser Error right out of Box, February 3, 2010
By
This review is from: HP Laserjet P4014N Printer (Office Product)
We purchased the 4014 through Amazon who got it through TekGalaxy. Several problems, we received it promptly. The person who the box was for open and unpackaged it, throwing out the box - in our compactor. 1st bad - our bad. But then we turn it on and it automatically shuts down, counts up the memory and shuts down. Called TekGalaxy to return and was told without the original box they could not take it back, we had everything else but the box. After deliberating what to do (we could have been covert, purchased another one from TekGalaxy and return the broken one in the new box, but no) we called HP. They determined it was a fuser error. Was able to get it to work after shutting it off and on a few times. Worked once stopped working again, with a fuser error. Called HP again, they said we needed to go to reseller and send it back to them, go up to management to send it back to TekGalaxy. They again said they couldn't without the original packaging even sent on their RMA.
Waited the 30 days called HP again said ok it's passed the Resellers 30 day they won't take it back HP you have to help now. They will send you a refurbed on no charge or send a new fuser. Come to find out the fuser was for 220-240 v and USA only handles 110 so the fusers hp would send would not work anyway. So they are sending a refurbed one overnight.
I'm really not happy with the product or the service we received from TekGalaxy, or HP in this instance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, once defective printer was replaced, January 9, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Laserjet P4014N Printer (Office Product)
We purchased 2 of these printers for our office. The one has always worked great, but the other one only worked for about a week and then started having problems. The first problem was paper jams, and then it started being extremely loud when attempting to print. The sound and issue I believe was the motor. Awesome printer overall, furthermore, the seller and HP were quick to help and replace the defective printer. One thing to mention is that it is extremely heavy (for me) to try and move around. Taking in and out of the boxes was difficult for one person. If you have a defective printer be sure you don't box it back up right away because HP walks you through troubleshooting before they will replace at no cost (they covered the shipping costs also). We also have the P4015's in our office which is nice that they use the same cartridge's for refills.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pull down tray use, December 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: HP Laserjet P4014N Printer (Office Product)
I use this printer in an accounting office. The printer is fast and that is great for me. But I have to write individual checks constantly all day. Using the pull down tray is something I use consistently. I wish I would have known that it does not automatically pull from that tray if you have something in it. If it does not read that something is on that tray it will print on the paper from the bottom tray. When you are writing over 75 checks at a time if it doesn't catch that the checks are on that tray, it will print all the checks on plain paper and I have to reprint again and I've just wasted all that paper. You can't even take the paper out of the bottom tray to stop that, the printer will not print anything if the bottom tray is empty. I'm sure people will say, put the checks in the bottom tray, but the reason they have a pull down tray is for this purpose. Individual checks are a daily thing for an accountant. So if you use the pull down tray on a printer, this printer is not for you.
