I received this unit as a replacement for one that was shipped defective. Amazon replaced the defective unit in one day. I love Amazon. '
Approximately one month after the purchase date, the unit started making a repetitive banging noise when the cartridge assembly shifted to the right to ready itself for the print job. I had another HP that did the same thing a few days after its one-year warranty expiration (wouldn't ya know?) and I knew that eventually this one would fail, too. Up to my eyeballs in paperwork and taxes, I put off e-mailing HP Tech Support until the beginning of April. I assumed the warranty period was the same as it was for my last HP printer - one year.
The Online Tech Support people were great, and they said they'd replace the unit in 2-3 days. I waited. They finally called me ten days later and asked me to call them. I spoke to Blaire, who informed me that this model only has a ninety-day warranty.
Shame on me for not knowing that and taking care of this two weeks prior, when the unit was still within the 90 days of coverage.
BUT the reason I am writing you guys is so you know what Blaire from HP Phone Tech Support told me, which was, in essence this:
(a) I am lucky I got 400 pages out of this printer - printers this cheap aren't supposed to print many pages, and
(b) (Said in his most condescending tone, and repeatedly) If I wanted a printer that lasted a little longer, I should have ponied up for one of the more expensive ones.
I told him I would tell Amazon buyers about his comments. He said, "Go ahead."
I don't know about you, but I'm used to similarly-priced Epson printers that last two years. I'm taking my next printer purchase back to them.

It works great for the money, its light and the design is nice.
Only thing is that the drivers take forever to install but until now thats my only complaint and IT DOESNT COME WITH A USB CABLE so u need to buy one.
I would NOT recommend it if you have to print a lot of documents, this is just a casual printer for low use i would say but the printing quality is very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price, October 20, 2009

BEFORE YOU READ ANYTHING ELSE, this printer comes with everything you'll need (including ink cartridges) EXCEPT the cable that connects it to your cpu. Be sure you buy a USB cable!

My old HP Deskjet finally died, so needed a replacement. Purchased this one a week ago. Setup was easy. Am still using Windows XP, so all went well and quickly. I had more hassle disconnecting the old printer from all of the cord tangle than anything else.

Print quality is fine.

A couple of negatives, though.

HP insists on adding all kinds of ad junk to your browser - I didn't see a quick way to do a custom install, so had to go in and delete all of it out.

Lag time between clicking the print button and actual printing is substantial. (This may be a function of my older cpu.)

This is undoubtedly the loudest printer I have ever owned.

But it was $29.99. If it lasts a couple of years, how can I complain?

Found the perfect printer for basic printing needs. Price and quality is excellent!
Pros: Sleek looking, great value and price, small enough, easy use and set-up, eco-friendly, energy saver
Cons: Ink cartridge still a bit pricey, but less than other hp printers.

I'm pleased with the purchase.

Basic printing and pain free. cheap as a new ink cartridge! Don't get caught up with expensive printers. Buy a cheap Brother laser for B/w and something cheap like this for color and you'll be very satisfied. Hardly anyone of us is a graphic designer. It's easy to get sucked up by features on printers. My parents bought me a massive HP scanner/printer for almost $200.00 when I was a freshman and this does the job just fine (and smaller form factor is great for putting it anywhere. Perfect for everyday use. Set-up took 2 minutes. I run Windows 7.

This product is excellent. It was very affordable, and very easy to put together. The only bad thing about this printer is that it didn't come with a USB cable so I had to go out of my way to get one. The quality of the printer is very good and I'd recommend everyone buying one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointed, April 5, 2010
This review is from: HP Deskjet D1660 Printer (CB770A#B1H) (Office Product)
I have better things to do than write a review for a failed piece of equipment. But for the aggravation I have experienced with this unit, others should know what a nightmare it was (is). My wife found the printer from a flier that came in junk mail. It appeared to be the one we wanted; cheap, attractive and available, or so we thought.

Instant problems with the software slowed our installation, after it loaded unneeded and cumbersome files onto my hard-drive. Then glitch after glitch forced the restart of my computer each time I printed. After several days of putting up with the nightmare software that comes with the unit, a grinding noise started, so severe that it would wake up the house in the morning, like a truck bearing in a garbage disposal (where the thing belongs).

So, cheap as it was, we replaced the unit. Keep in mind that we now have invested $70+ in the unit that could have bought a multitude of other printers without all of the glitch-filled operation and frustration. It, too, proved a problem. From ink cartridges that deplete 3 times faster than others, to the mechanical and software issues prevalent with the unit following uncounted restarts of my computer, we abandoned the unit for a better one after a few weeks of pulling my hair out.

Bottom line: It may be cheap, and what few documents the thing will properly and sharply print without problems, it is not worth spending ANY money on, and should be avoided by other customers lured into buying what appears to be a good bargain from a so-called reputable manufacturer.

I had worn out my old HP Deskjet 3740 printer and was so pleased with it I got this one to replace it. I didnt expect too much with it being an entry level low price printer but it is great. Much quieter than my old Deskjet and setup was easy on windows XP. Color and B&W printing is crisp and clear. Dont let the low price fool you, this is a great printer with
HPs attention to detail. You do need to order a USB cable with it as it is not included but it does come with color and black ink cartidges. For home use or for a student it is perfect.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!, April 11, 2010
This review is from: HP Deskjet D1660 Printer (CB770A#B1H) (Office Product)
This is the worst printer I've ever owned in my life. I needed something quick, cheap and easy to get me through the rest of the school year, so I picked this up for $32. I just needed basic printing and was happy to get something that did color and b&w. It was easy to set up (although it did not come with a very necessary cord, but thankfully I had one at home). But it has NEVER ONCE printed correctly on the first try. Last week, I spent hours and hours trying to print items I needed for an assignment the following day. Every single time I try to print a page with color, it prints a few lines and then jams. I then have to reboot the printer AND my computer to try to get it to print again. Every. Single. Time. It is the most horrible, worthless piece of crap I've ever owned EVER. I plan on writing HP and telling them how bad this printer is. Then I'm going back to the store I purchased it from and demanding a full refund. This thing is nothing but a headache. I would have been better off going to Kinko's and printing out my assignments - it certainly would have been quicker to do that!

1.0 out of 5 stars very disappointed, November 18, 2009

The directions for set-up are very clear and easy to follow. But that was as far as I could get. I could NOT get any power to the printer. I tried several outlets, checked connections, etc. and finally sent an e-mail to hp's support people. Several days later, I got an answer to try a different outlet. I wrote back that I had and did again and still could get nothing. Several days later I got an e-mail that a higher-up would call me in 2-3 business days. He didn't. I sent the printer back.

It's too bad their customer support has become so abysmal. I used to like their printers.
