Easy to set up.

The machine sets up nicely and I could get the phone to work but could not get the fax itself to either send or receive.

Very compact, very good choice as long as speed is not a requirement. Not a heavy duty machine. Great for occasional faxes sent from home, small business, etc.

HP 640 Inkjet printer is defective. When unable to begin operations based on set-up instructions in manual,
called HP Service number provided. After ultimately finding the appropriate tech service person, he prescribed various diagnostics to get machine operative. All failed. He informed me that it was defective.
HP refused to replace the new machine that was bought. HP said the only remedy was to return the defective new machine to them at customer's own expense. And that HP would only replace it with a used refurbish machine. Service people were rude and continually placed customer on hold. Poor product, poor service.

This is our first home fax machine. It was easy to put together and the directions were easy to follow to learn how to operate it. We love it. We can fax things easily and we receive things easily. Highly recommend this fax machine, especially for the quality and the price.

While the HP 640 fax works on a dedicated phone line( and yes, it works on a Comcast line), the machine does not work on a shared line in auto mode. When recognizing a voice call, the HP 640 changes the ring tone to notify you of the incoming call. Nice...BUT, after an individual picks up the phone and begins a conversation, the fax machine continues to ring and attempts to connect to a carrier; which of course, is not there. We called HP and while they were responsive, they could not resolve the problem because it is a inherent flaw of the machine. The machine also does not work on a shared line with an answering machine.

I found the machine somewhat difficult to set up & program in all the settings, my phone #, etc., that I needed to do; but probably no more difficult than other fax machines. And a major frustration: when you have it set to "auto", so it can switch between phone & fax, if you answer a phone call from a different phone, this keeps ringing & ringing thru-out the whole length of the phone call (???)--incredibly annoying.

But as I use it only occasionally, I just keep it unplugged until I need to use it. And for the $$, & esp. since it uses ink cartridges unstead of one of those awful film rolls like on my 5 y.o Sharp, it's probably a pretty good buy.

This attractive, compact fax machine is perfect for my home office. Set-up was so easy my dog could have done it! And I love the fact that it has an ink cartridge instead of the cumbersome ink roll that my previous machine had. I like everything about this small, easy-to-use fax machine!

This machine works well, the display panel -- only 16 characters wide -- is very well designed, and the small footprint is perfect for home use.

Note, however, that it does NOT provide a speaker phone. The "Loudspeaker" button is just that - a loudspeaker, and not a speakerphone. Good for listening to voice mail, perhaps, but of no use if you want to talk.

Review of the HP 640 Fax

First, let me say I am a fan of HP, or at least was until Carli Ferini, whats-her-name, ran the company into the ground.

All of my computers, printer, laptop, camera, etc., are HP. They have outstanding customer service which led me to choose them.

Since the HP All-in-One (One for all?) machine died completely after only 2 years, I bought this HP 640, wanting a simple, easy to use, inexpensive Fax machine.

Well, it was inexpensive. It certainly is not simple nor easy to use, six months later I still cannot get it to work properly.

The directions, 66 pages for god's sake, are confusing and contradictory and at least in one case, flat out wrong. You put the copy to be faxed face down, not face up as they say in the directions.

I cannot get the machine to work in conjunction with an answering machine, unlike the two previous fax machines I have had over the years. It simply won't do it. Either it butts in on telephone calls or doesn't answer when it should.

At last I got it to stop printing out a confirmation sheet after sending a fax, here again the directions are contradictory and confusing.

Hopefully, this model is discontinued, in case it isn't I wanted to save anyone else from buying one like I did. I won't buy another HP when this quits.

Why do these people feel compelled to add feature upon feature to a simple product when all I want it to do is to send a damn fax? The programming of this takes hours, literally hours. The options and tricks are apparently endless, even in this inexpensive machine.

My first fax was a Panasonic which worked faithfully for ten years until a cross country move drained the electrons.
